PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team opened its season on Wednesday afternoon, falling at Villanova, 1-0. The Dragons managed 11 shots, but put just two on goal and could not find the back of the net as they fell in their opener for the first time since 2006.
Drexel had chances early on, putting up two shots within a minute of each other just 12 minutes into the game. They earned a corner five minutes later, but after letting those chances slip away, the Dragons saw Villanova break the scoreless tie in the game's 31st minute. Aaron Dennis took a pass from Oscar Umar in front of the goal and punched it home, for what turned out to be the only score of the contest.
The offensive flurry picked up again late in the half, with the Dragons taking the final three shot attempts of the period. That included their first shot on goal in the 43rd minute of the game, when Brandon Zeller just missed beating Wildcat goakeeper John Fogarty.
Zeller would have the Dragons' other shot on goal, again testing Fogarty in the 68th minute.
Drexel goalkeeper Pentti Pussinen kept the Dragons in the game, recording four saves overall. That included three in a five-minute span as Villanova ratcheted up the pressure beginning in the 78th minute.
The Dragons return to action on September 4, when they make their longest road trip of the season to visit Creighton. The game in Omaha begins at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.
