Philadelphia – The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell to James Madison, 16-9, on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons trailed by just three goals after 30 minutes of play, however, James Madison went on a six-goal run at the start of the second half and held on to the lead for the remainder of the contest. Drexel outshot the Dukes, 26-22, and held an 18-9 advantage in draw controls. The squad dropped to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the league.
James Madison (9-5; 3-1) opened the game with four straight goals. With 12:24 showing on the clock, freshman Emily Duffey broke through the Dukes' defenders and fired the ball past the left shoulder of opposing goalkeeper Schylar Healy to cut the deficit to three, 4-1. Seniors Alyse Maiden and Kelli Joran added two more points to bring the game within one-goal. The Duke's found the back of the cage three more times to broaden the lead to three, 7-3. After winning the following draw, junior Amanda Norcini carried the ball all the way into the attacking and netted a goal off of the fast break. The Dragons were down, 7-4, at halftime.
The Dukes controlled the momentum during the first 19 minutes of the second half. The visitors scored six goals giving James Madison a nine-goal cushion. Drexel's Jessica Rudloff sailed a long pass to sophomore Joelle Hartke, who broke towards the eight-meter and shot the ball into the right side of the cage. James Madison's Emily Rhoads subbed into the game and scored in the Duke's next possession. With less than six minutes remaining in the game, Maiden tallied two quick goals along with a free-position goal by sophomore Alissa Watts. The late rally wasn't enough to retake the lead as the Dragons dropped a 16-9 final decision to James Madison.
Maiden finished the day with four goals and an assist for five points. She is now tied for eighth on Drexel's all-time leaderboard with 113 goals and moved to fifth all-time with 166 career points.
