PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team defeated Monmouth, 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon in a single game that was originally scheduled to be played at Monmouth but was moved to Drexel Field due to unplayable field conditions. Drexel remained the away team as Shelby Taylor struck out four on her way to picking up her 10th win of the season.

The Dragons got on the board first in the top of the third as Taylor drew a bases-loaded walk. Drexel would strike again the next inning as Baeley Reed reached on a fielder's choice and then stole both second and third base. She would cross the plate as Comfort Ahonkhai put the ball into play and reached base on an error by the shortstop.

Down 2-0, the Hawks came out fighting in the bottom of the fourth. A single and two walks loaded the bases for Monmouth as Shannon Fitzgerald came to the plate and singled through the right side to drive in two runs and tie the game. Drexel was able to limit the damage though, as Taylor got the next batter to strike out swinging to end the inning.

One half-inning later, Drexel regained the lead as Taylor sent a solo-home run, her second of the season, over the center field fence to give the Dragons a 3-2 advantage in the top of the fifth. The squad would tack on two more runs in the seventh to make it a 5-2 game.

In a final effort in the bottom of the seventh, Monmouth's Kaitie Schumacher hit a solo homer to give the Hawks an additional run but ultimately they were unable to overcome the deficit.

The Dragons return to action on Thursday when they will host Georgetown at Drexel Field for a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
