Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of 2014, 2-0 at Penn

PHILADELPHIA – The third time was the charm for Philadelphia Soccer Six opponents attempting to upend the Drexel men's soccer team in 2014. After defeating Temple and Villanova in the opening week, the Dragons visited University City rival Penn and fell to the Quakers for a second-straight season, 2-0 at Rhodes Field.
The Quakers got on the board in the 53rd minute when Austin Kuhn took a feed in the middle of the box and beat Tyler Afflerbach with a low shot to the keeper's right. The goal ended a stretch of 235:27 to start the season without giving up a goal for the Dragons. The first two games for the Dragons ended in 1-0 victories.
Not long after scoring the game's first goal, Penn got on the board again. This time, Levi Levenfiche dribbled his way through several defenders and got off a high laser that eluded Afflerbach's grasp in the 59th minute of play.
Drexel had perhaps its best look of the game in the 70th minute when Erik Alexandersson found himself with some space in the box. The freshman, looking for his first collegiate goal, ripped a high driver that Penn goalkeeper Max Polkinhorne was just able to get his fingertips on the ball and tip it over the crossbar to keep the Dragons off the board.
That would be the last strong chance for the Dragons, however, as Drexel's third game of the week – after playing nearly a full half against Villanova on Tuesday before lightning forced the game's postponement – took its took on the team's legs.
After opening the season with three straight against Philadelphia Soccer Six opponents, the Dragons will welcome Loyola (Md.) into Vidas Field for their next contest. Drexel and Loyola will kick things off next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
