PRINCETON, N.J. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team dropped to 1-2 on the season on Wednesday as the Dragons fell at No. 11 Princeton, 8-4. The Dragons took 40:15 to score, by which point the Tigers had built a five-goal lead which they would not relinquish.
Devin Nihill scored two goals for the Dragons, her second-consecutive multi-goal game. Milan White and Lacey Aghazarian added scores, while Emily Duffey had an assist. Teresha Bradley stopped an early-season high eight shots. Olivia Hompe scored four times to pace the Tigers.
The Dragons' defense continued to play well, holding the No. 11 Tigers to just eight goals, only three of which came after halftime. Drexel has now allowed an average of 7.3 goals per game through three contests this year.
Within the first 10 minutes of the game, the Tigers had taken five shots and converted on three of them, grabbing a 3-0 lead. Erin Slifer had a goal and an assist in that span. Down 3-0, the Dragons steadied themselves, and began running their offense and getting shots at the net. In all, Drexel would get off five shots in the first half, all of which tested Princeton goalie Ellie DeGarmo. DeGarmo passed the test each time, though, coming up with five first-half saves and keeping Drexel off the board.
After neither team scored for more than 17 minutes, the Tigers came up with another goal, Olivia Hompe's second, at the 2:49 mark. They followed it up with a score 1:16 later to send themselves into halftime up 5-0.
Drexel got the scoring started just over 10 minutes into the second half when Devin Nihill, who notched her first four career goals in the Dragons' 11-9 win over Columbia on Sunday, took advantage of a man-up opportunity and scored with 19:45 remaining. The Tigers would respond quickly, getting their sixth goal less than two minutes later.
With 10:46 to play, Milan White cut into the Princeton deficit, netting her fourth goal of the season. White became the only Dragon to score in each of Drexel's first three games, boasting a goal in the season opener at Monmouth and two in the win over Columbia at home. Again, however, the Tigers had a swift answer, as Erin McMunn scored at the 8:54 mark.
Nihill kept the Dragons' hopes alive with 5:47 remaining when she converted a free position shot into a goal, pulling Drexel back within four and giving herself back-to-back games with multiple goals. Ninety seconds later, the Dragons were back on the attack. Lacey Aghazarian took a free position and was stopped by DeGarmo, but after Emily Duffey collected the loose ball, she found Aghazarian who finished with her second try. That made it a three-goal game and forced a timeout by the Tigers with 4:10 remaining.
Princeton, which won 10 of 14 draw controls on the evening, won a critical one coming out of the timeout to keep the Dragons at bay. Two minutes later, the Tigers scored to stretch their lead back to four and effectively put the game away.
Wednesday's game was the first of five straight on the road for the Dragons, who are still in search of their first road victory of the season. Drexel will get its next chance on Saturday when the Dragons visit Stony Brook. That game is set to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
