STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell at No. 17 Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon, 8-4. The game was the second of a five-game road trip for the Dragons, who remain in search of their first road victory of the season.
Emily Kellett scored twice for Drexel (1-3), briefly pulling the Dragons within two goals early in the second half. Ashley Bupp had a pair of assists, while Lacey Aghazarian and Alissa Watts also added goals. Teresha Bradley came up with 10 saves, a season high. She has 18 saves while allowing just 16 goals over the last two games, both on the road against ranked teams. Jocelyn Quaile and Eva Winiarski each had three caused turnovers to help aid the defensive effort.
Slow offensive starts have been an issue for the Dragons through the early going, particularly on the road. Away from Vidas Field, Drexel has allowed 11 first-half goals and scored just one. Just over three minutes into the game on Saturday, the Dragons found themselves down by two goals after the Seawolves notched a pair within 35 seconds of each other. First it was Tewaaraton nominee Michelle Rubino, scoring at the 27:30 mark. Samantha DiSalvo followed with 26:55 to play, making it 2-0.
It was 4-0 at halftime, and though the first half has not been kind to the Dragons this season, the second half has been a different story. It took Lacey Aghazarian just 2:07 to get Drexel on the board after the teams came out of the locker rooms. Her third goal of the season cut the lead for Stony Brook to three, at 4-1.
After the Seawolves got an answer, Drexel closed the gap to two goals with a pair of scores from Emily Kellett. Her first two goals of the season, they were both assisted by Ashley Bupp. The fifth-year senior had not recorded a point since March 7, 2012, as part of a 15-0 win over Mount St. Mary's. On Saturday, it took Bupp just 38 seconds to triple her career output, as she set up Kellett twice to make it a 5-3 game with 20:34 remaining. The first goal came off a free position attempt, with the Dragons declining to take the direct shot and instead feeding it around to Kellett. The second followed an Aghazarian draw control.
Stony Brook would counter with a goal of its own less than a minute later, adding another at the 16:05 mark. The Seawolves' defense was able to slow the Dragons after the small outburst, though Drexel would do the same on their defensive end. Neither team scored until 5:41 remained when Alissa Watts earned a free position attempt and finished it off for her first goal of the season. It was an uplifting sign for Drexel and the senior attacker, who missed the last four games of last season with a knee injury but still finished fifth on the team with 11 goals and 14 points.
That would be all the Dragons could muster offensively, as the Seawolves added one more to complete the 8-4 final score.
The Dragons continue their five-game road trip next weekend with two games in New England. Drexel will visit Massachusetts first on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. That will be followed by a trip to New Hampshire, where the Dragons will take on the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
