AMHERST, Mass. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team dropped its third straight game on Friday, falling at Massachusetts, 9-4. The loss dropped the Dragons' record to 1-4 on the young season, and kept them winless on the road through the early going.
Teresha Bradley came up with 14 saves, matching a career high. It was her second-straight game with double-digit saves. Bradley and the Drexel defense has yet to allow double-digit goals in a game. Jocelyn Quaile had three caused turnovers, two draw controls and four ground balls to help hold the UMass attack at bay. Madeline DiBrino added two caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Caroline Thiele chipped in two of each. Four different Dragons scored and six registered points as the attack showed signs of coming together, but they could not get over the hump in the second half as UMass held on.
Drexel got on the board first, the first time this season the Dragons had accomplished that. Joelle Hartke lined up her second goal of the season off a feed from Milan White with 22:35 to play in the first half. It gave the Dragons their first lead on the road of the year, but it would be short-lived as the Minutewomen evened things up just 2:22 later. Nicole Troost's game-tying goal sparked a run of four UMass goals that went unanswered by the Dragons before halftime, leaving the Minutewomen on top 4-1 at the break.
After UMass got on the board first in the second half, Drexel's offense came to life and got the Dragons right back in it. Less than three minutes into the stanza, Nadia Pelham-Lacey ripped home her third goal of the season, taking a feed from Devin Nihill to make it a 5-2 game. Four minutes later, it was Emily Kellett converting her third of the year, pulling the Dragons back within two at 5-3 with 22:54 to play.
Though UMass would score only once over the next 18 minutes, the Dragons also went on an extended scoring drought, unable to take advantage of the opening left by the Minutewomen. Still, they had a chance when Lacey Aghazarian found the back of the net with 5:00 to play, making it a 6-4 contest.
That would prove as close as the Dragons could get, however. UMass had a quick answer, scoring just 13 seconds after Aghazarian's tally to get its lead back to three. They would tack on two more goals over the closing minutes to complete the 9-4 contest.
The Dragons will remain in the New England region for their next game, as they travel further north to New Hampshire for a matchup with the Wildcats on Sunday. That game is set to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
