PHILADELPHIA – It was Home Sweet Home for the Drexel women's lacrosse team, which snapped a five-game losing skid in its first home game since Feb. 22, defeating Villanova, 9-5. The Dragons are now 2-0 at home on the season. Saturday's win marks the beginning of a five-game homestand.
Emily Duffey had two goals and an assist to lead the offensive output for Drexel. Lacey Aghazarian and Milan White scored twice each, while Emily Kellett had a goal and an assist. Joelle Hartke added a goal, as did Jocelyn Quaile, whose goal was the first of her collegiate career. Defensively, the Dragons put together their best effort of the season, holding the Wildcats to their lowest goal output of the season. Teresha Bradley had four saves. Villanova turned the ball over 24 times, with Drexel causing 12 of those. Eva Winiarski and Madeline DiBrino each had three caused turnovers, and Hartke added two. Devin Nihill and Duffey each had two draw controls for Drexel, with Kelly McDevitt and Duffey each adding one.
The Dragons got off to a quick start. Lacey Aghazarian scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season just 4:21 into the action to put Drexel on top. Emily Duffey assisted on the goal, scored on the advantage. A little over a minute later, Milan White netted her first goal of the afternoon to put Drexel up 2-0.
White's goal came with 24:12 left on the clock in the first half, but the Dragons would not score again until just one tick remained. In the meantime, however, they played staunch defense, as Villanova managed to tie the score but could not take a lead. With the clock winding down in the half, Drexel took advantage of the 12th Wildcats turnover. Joelle Hartke found the back of the net with just one second remaining, sending the Dragons into the locker room up 3-2.
The lead could have been even more if not for the strong goaltending of Villanova's Jaclyn Fraum. The Dragons outshot Villanova 11-5 in the half, and had eight of their attempts go on net. Fraum stopped five of them, though, to keep Drexel close. Fraum finished with six saves on the afternoon as the Dragons got to her in the second half for six goals on seven shots on net.
After halftime, the Wildcats again tied the score before Drexel took the lead back at the 25:46 mark when Emily Kellett pumped in her fifth goal of the season. Four minutes later, it was White again. Her eighth of the year made it a 5-3 Drexel lead with 21:40 remaining.
The score stayed that way for more than 12 minutes before Duffey got her second point of the afternoon and her fifth goal of the season, helping the Dragons double Villanova's score at 6-3. The Wildcats ended their 20:42 scoreless drought a minute later, cutting the Drexel lead back down to two.
The Dragons nursed that two-goal lead until Aghazarian scored with 1:57 remaining. It made Saturday her third-straight game with multiple goals as she now leads the squad with 11 on the season. After Villanova added another, the Dragons won a critical draw control and worked the ball around to Jocelyn Quaile, who fired in her first career goal. It was the 57th game of the defensive leader's career. Duffey would add one more, assisted by Kellett, before the Dragons walked off the field with their second victory of the season.
The Dragons will return to action at Vidas Field next Sunday, Mar. 22, when they host Penn State. That game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
