Amherst, Mass. - The Drexel men's lacrosse team will look to clinch a berth in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Championships this weekend at UMass. The Dragons enter the game with a 2-1 mark in league play, and a win will put them in the CAA postseason tournament for the fourth straight season. It won't be an easy task, though, as the Minutemen return to Garber Field for the first time this season. UMass was forced to play at McGuirk Stadium due to field repairs, but is back on its home field for its final two games.
The Dragons are now 6-6 after winning their last two games and four of their last five. Cole Shafer's goal two minutes into overtime gave the Dragons a 9-8 win against Delaware on Saturday. Drexel had a three-goal lead, but squandered it in the fourth quarter. However, Shafer was able to give the Dragons the win as he completed his 11th career hat trick. Drexel's defense has played well over the last few weeks and has been a key to the Dragons' resurgence. Offensively, Ryan Belka leads the team with 25 goals and 42 points. Shafer chips in with 22, while Jules Raucci has 10. Jimmy Joe Granito has played well in goal and is now fifth in the NCAA in goals against average.
UMass is 3-8 this season and 1-2 in league play. However, the Minutemen have lost three games by just a goal. Those three losses came to Albany, currently ranked in the top 10 nationally, Fairfield and Harvard. UMass has a balanced offense that averages just under 10 goals a game. Six different players have at least 10 goals this season. Nick Mariano leads the way with 19 goals, 14 assists and 33 points. Peter Lindley adds 16, while Brendan Hegarty has scored 13 times. Zach Oliveri has started all 11 games in the cage.
