Philadelphia - The Drexel men's lacrosse team has a pivotal Colonial Athletic Association game on Saturday afternoon in Hempstead. The Dragons face Hofstra at 1 p.m. at Shuart Stadium. The game will also mark the second annual HEADStrong Hero Bowl, which will pay homage to cancer survivors while also serving as a tribute to those who have lost their battle against cancer. It is also the hope of the Headstrong Foundation that this event will spur an even greater opportunity for service and volunteerism for students on both campuses.
The Dragons begin the day with a 4-6 record and an 0-1 mark in CAA play. Drexel lost to Fairfield on Saturday, 7-4, despite two goals from Ryan Belka. The senior leads the team in almost every offensive category including goals (20), assists (15) and points (35). Nick Saputo is winning 58 percent of his face-offs and leads the team with 82 ground balls. The Drexel defense played one of its best games of the season on Saturday against the Stags. Miles Thomas forced a career-high five turnovers and had six ground balls. Jake Kiernan also had a good game with three turnovers and four ground balls.
Hofstra is 4-5 and is 1-1 in conference play after beating Delaware on Saturday, 9-5. Two weeks ago, the Pride dropped its CAA opener against UMass, 9-7. Sam Llinares is having a huge year thus far. He leads the CAA with 48 points and has 26 goals. Mike Malave, now a senior, forms a potent one-two punch with Llinares. He has found the net 25 times in just nine games. Chris Selva has started every game in goal and has a .517 save percentage
Both teams will help raise awareness for the HEADstrong Foundation by taking the field wearing HF lime green shoelaces and chinstraps. In addition, the goals will also be strung with HEADstrong's lime green nets. The winner of the Hero Bowl will be presented with a custom-made, three-tiered lime and royal blue trophy with a silver cup on top. The trophy will be proudly displayed for the year in the athletic office of the winning school. Last season, Hofstra claimed the trophy with an 11-9 victory over Drexel. Fans can purchase tickets to Saturday's Hero Bowl at the Hofstra Athletics Ticket Office in the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Monday through Friday during normal business hours, by phone by calling (516) HOF-TIXX (463-8499), or online at GoHofstra.com by clicking here.
Over the years, both Hofstra and Drexel have been closely involved with the HEADstrong Foundation. Nicholas Colleluori, the founder, was a beloved member of the Hofstra Pride men's lacrosse team before and during his cancer diagnosis, and the program has continued to support several of the organization's events and campaigns since the Foundation's inception. In 2006, shortly after Colleluori's diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Drexel University became the first collegiate men's lacrosse team to wear HEADstrong's iconic lime green shoelaces during a televised game against the University of Virginia, which helped the organization gain national attention.
"On behalf of the HEADstrong Foundation and those affected by cancers we wish to extend our sincere appreciation to Hofstra University, Drexel University and the Colonial Athletic Association for recognizing our cause and assisting us to create this special charity event to raise awareness and funds to support cancer patients and families who have been devastated by these diseases," HEADstrong President Cheryl Colleluori and Nick's mother said. "Both programs are very close to our organization and we applaud their efforts in helping us to make a difference. Saturday, Hofstra Men's Lacrosse will be welcoming back alumni and their families and we know that this will be the perfect atmosphere for taking the field for the cause, remembering our Nick, celebrating HEADstrong and honoring those affected by the disease."
