PHILADELPHIA - Behind a 14-goal game, the Drexel women's lacrosse team (1-0) earned a win in its season opener over the American Eagles (0-1) by a final of 14-4 in frigid temperatures from Vidas Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
It was the first 10-goal victory in favor of the Dragons since the women defeated Longwood, 18-8, at home on March, 14, 2012.
The Dragons maintained a balanced scoring effort with seven goals coming in each half while holding the Eagles to three in the first and just one in the second.
Senior Emily Duffey started the scoring on Sunday as she tacked on the first goal less than four minutes into the affair. Junior Devin Nihill scored the second for the Dragons less than 30 seconds after to give Drexel an early 2-0 lead. The Dragons never trailed in the contest while Duffey and Nihill kick-started the offense as the duo combined for eight of the 14 total goals, four each.
After American made it 2-1, Duffey and Nihill scored goals three and four respectively, 4-1. Junior Caroline Thiele assisted on Nihill's goal.
Halfway through the first, sophomore Nadia Pelham-Lacey notched her first goal off a pass from sophomore Alex Beilman. Pelham-Lacey scored twice in the game and added four assists for a six-point effort.
Junior Lacey Aghazarian made it 6-2 Drexel with around 11 minutes left in the first. Duffey then added the seventh before American ended the scoring from the first 30 minutes. The Dragons took a 7-3 lead into halftime.
Just like the opening minutes of the affair, Nihill and Duffey started the scoring once again for the Dragons to open the second, 9-3. Pelham-Lacey added her second of the game midway through the final half for Drexel's 10th on the day.
Beilman, Aghazarian, junior Lauren Gerrie and Nihill strung together the next four goals as the Dragons scored seven-unanswered goals in second half, which also gave Drexel a lead as high as 11 goals during the game. American's Brooke Stapleton added the lone second half goal for the Eagles with 2:24 remaining. Drexel went on to win by a final of 14-4.
Junior Carlee Ries posted a solid game in goal as the Forest Hill, Maryland native allowed only three goals, all in the first half, to go along with six saves in 56:20 minutes of action. Freshman Sigourney Heerink relieved Ries in goal for the final 3:40 minutes of the game, allowing one goal while tacking on a save in her first appearance as a Dragon.
Junior Eva Winiarski grabbed six of the 10 draw controls for the Dragons in addition to causing three turnovers. Thiele also caused three turnovers as the pair led the Dragons on the afternoon.
The 14 goals marked the most in a game for Drexel since the squad defeated local rival Villanova 14-10 back on March 6, 2013. It was also the most goals scored by the Dragons in a season opener since the first game of the 2012 campaign when Drexel won 15-10 over George Washington.
The women will now head to New York City next weekend to face the Columbia Lions on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m.
