HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Drexel softball team lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader to Hofstra on the road. The Dragons fell to the Pride, 13-3 after six innings in game one and then again by score of 12-3 after five innings in the second game of the day. Baeley Reed went 3-for-6 on the day with two RBI and a run scored in the losing efforts.
Hofstra got off to a quick start with four runs scored in the bottom of the first. They added two more in the second and then another in the third to take a 7-0 lead after the first three innings. The Dragons were able to get on the board in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs off a double from Taylor M. Lee with the bases loaded and then adding a third as Reed hit an infield single to shortstop to drive in a Kimberly Chan from third to make it a 7-3 game. The Pride would add three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 10-3 and then cemented the victory with a three-run homer from Lacey Clark in the bottom of the sixth that put the run-rule into effect and awarded Hofstra a 13-3 win.
The Dragons were the first to score in the second game of the day, as Gabriela Kuroda and Chan drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded that would give Drexel an early 2-0 advantage. The Pride retaliated in the bottom of the inning, however, and took a strong lead after posting nine runs off six hits and one error. Hofstra would add two more runs in the second as Caryn Bailey homered to left center to lead off the inning and then Megan Patierno crossed the plate as Chloe Fitzgerald put the ball in play with what turned out to be a fielder's choice. The Pride added its last run in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI single from Fitzgerald to go ahead, 12-2. The Dragons were able to get one back in the top of the fifth off an RBI single from Reed, but it was not enough as Hofstra went on to win by a 12-3 margin after five innings.
With the losses the Dragons move to 17-28 overall and 0-13 in conference play, while Hofstra improves to 23-18, 7-6 CAA.
Drexel and Hofstra will return to action tomorrow as they close out the weekend series with a single game beginning at 12 p.m.
