PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team could not keep up with No. 16 James Madison on Friday night as the Dragons fell to the Dukes at Vidas Field, 19-7. Drexel never led in the game as James Madison scored the first three of the game and built a 14-5 lead by the end of the first half.
Caroline Cummings and Lisa Rogers each scored twice for Drexel (7-7, 2-1). For Cummings, it was her first career multi-goal and multi-point game. Nadia Pelham-Lacey, Devin Nihill and Lauren Gerrie each added goals for the Dragons, with Nihill chipping in an assist and Caroline Thiele adding two helpers. Eva Winiarski had three draw controls to lead the team, and was one of three Dragons with multiple caused turnovers, joining Molly Savage and Lindsay Shettle.
Kristen Gaudian scored five goals and had two assists for a game-high seven points to lead the charge for James Madison.
After the Dukes scored the first three of the evening, Drexel junior Nadia Pelham-Lacey scored her 32nd goal of the season, extending her point streak to 14 games to open the season. James Madison quickly responded with two more, though, before Caroline Cummings netted her third of the year and first of the night. That pattern would continue until 11:43 remained in the first half, with JMU scoring twice and Drexel answering with one. First it was Lauren Gerrie scoring to make it 7-3, then Lisa Rodgers cut the Dukes' lead to 9-4.
After Rogers' first goal of the evening, James Madison rattled off five straight to create some separation and briefly give themselves a 10-goal lead, 14-4. Devin Nihill got on the board with 3:06 to play, a man-up goal that ended the JMU scoring run and provided the halftime margin of 14-5.
Neither team would score for the first 6:38 of the second half before Cummings scored her second of the game. Both of her goals came off passes from Caroline Thiele, her team-leading 18th and 19th of the year. Rogers scored her second of the night just over a minute later to make it a 14-7 game.
That would be as close as the Dragons would get, however, as the Dukes held them off and scored the game's final five goals over the last 22:05 of the action. Carlee Ries finished with nine saves, but could not keep the high-powered Dukes from putting up the second-highest total of any Drexel opponent this season.
The Dragons will get back to work on Sunday afternoon when they visit Towson. That game is set to get underway at noon.
