TOWSON, Md. – Despite a solid defensive effort, the Drexel women's lacrosse team fell at No. 17 Towson on Sunday afternoon, 14-7. The Dragons were done in by a slow start, but stayed within range of the Tigers' high-powered offense despite spotting them the first five goals of the game.
Devin Nihill had a hat trick to lead the Dragons (7-8, 2-3). Lisa Rogers scored twice and had an assist for three points, while Nadia Pelham-Lacey chipped in a goal and an assist. Lauren Gerrie also scored for Drexel, which slipped out of playoff position in the CAA for the time being but will have a chance to win their way back in with their season finale next Saturday. Maggie Stetson won four of the Dragons' seven draw controls on the afternoon. Carlee Ries had nine saves in goal, and Molly Savage and Rachel Warden led the defense with four and three caused turnovers, respectively.
The Dragons were held off the scoreboard for the first 20:52 of the game as Towson methodically worked its way to a 5-0 lead. Alyssa Ferro scored twice in that run for the Tigers. With 9:08 to play in the first half, Devin Nihill got Drexel on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal, her 30th of the season.
After Towson got the goal back, Drexel scored three of the last four goals of the first half to cut Towson's lead to 7-4 at halftime. Lisa Rogers scored two of those three for the Dragons, with the first coming off a pass from Nadia Pelham-Lacey and the second, with eight seconds to go, an unassisted score. Nihill also connected for her second of the day with 2:46 to play when Courtney Dietzel fed her for the goal.
As they did in the first half, Towson started quickly in the second with three straight to build the Tigers' largest lead of the afternoon until the final seconds, 10-4. Again, though, the Dragons answered right back. Lauren Gerrie took a dish from Rogers and scored her 21st of the year with 13:02 to play to begin a 3-0 Dragons run. Nihill capped off her hat trick with 8:06 remaining to tie Pelham-Lacey for the team lead with 32 goals on the year, again taking a pass from Dietzel.
That tie atop the team leaderboard did not last long, as Pelham-Lacey regained the lead with her 33rd goal of the season just 3:33 later on a man-down goal, cutting the Tigers' lead to 10-7 with 4:33 to play.
That would be as close as the Dragons would get, however, as Towson closed with four straight to cap the victory.
Drexel will close out its regular season on Saturday when the Dragons host Delaware at 1:00 p.m. at Vidas Field. The game will be preceded by the team's annual Senior Day ceremony, and the game itself will hold significant implications for the CAA Championships. The Dragons head into Saturday one game behind the Blue Hens for the fourth and final playoff spot in the CAA Championships, but would earn that bid with a victory over Delaware on Saturday.
