PHILADELPHIA — Elena Bontatibus matched a career-high eight points as the Dragons rolled past Monmouth, 15–10, Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia. The junior, who entered the matchup with just nine points on the season, erupted for five in the first half, including the Dragons first three points.
Kate Quinn collected four goals for her fifth hat-trick of the year. Drexel dominated from the draw circle, winning 19 of 27 draw controls, with Amelia Bentley leading the way with 12. Lucy Dailey stopped nine shots as the redshirt freshman played the full 60 minutes. The Dragons move to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the CAA.
Drexel opened the scoring as Quinn tallied her first of the day, receiving the feed from Bontatibus at the 8-meter and running down the alley for her 25th of the season. Monmouth answered to even the score, but the Dragons responded with three straight, as Ellie Wall, Bontatibus and Quinn all found the back of the net in just over a two-minute span. After Monmouth added one at the 1:06 mark, Quinn struck again with her second in a row, taking it herself after the ensuing draw.
The Hawks started the second quarter getting a wide open look in front of the cage to pull within two. Bontatibus responded with two straight in just a 1:30 span, collecting her first hat-trick in a Drexel uniform. Monmouth scored just in front of the net before Teagan Quinn fired another through to take a 8-4 lead at the half.
The Dragons kept the momentum into the second half, outscoring the Hawks 3-1 in the second half. After both teams traded goals, the Dragons added a pair, with Bontatibus scooping up a loose ball and going coast-to-coast before setting up Caroline Lennon for the second goal of her career. Lila Traynor followed with her second career goal to extend the lead to 11–5.
The Hawks battled back over the final 15 minutes, scoring four of the next five to cut the deficit to three with 9:55 remaining. The Dragons answered quickly, as Bontatibus and Quinn found the back of the net just 44 seconds apart to regain control. Monmouth added one more late, but Maddie Kane capped the scoring with under a minute to play to seal the win.
The Dragons play their final non-conference game of the regular season as they face Temple at Howarth Field on Tuesday, April 21. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
