PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field as the Dragons fell to Delaware, 16-9. The loss eliminated the Dragons from postseason contention and sent the Blue Hens into the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. The Dragons trailed by just one at halftime, but saw the Blue Hens pull away in the second as they were held to just two goals after intermission.
Lisa Rogers scored two goals and had an assist to lead the way for the Dragons. She was one of six seniors honored before the game in the Dragons' annual Senior Day ceremony, along with Lauren Gerrie, Devin Nihill, Carlee Ries, Caroline Thiele and Eva Winiarski. Thiele also had a two-goal game, matching her career best, while Nihill finished with a goal and an assist and Gerrie did the same. Nihill finished her career with 76 goals scored, good for 16th on the Dragons' all-time list. Winiarski won three draw controls and had a ground ball while Ries came up with 10 saves, her third double-digit save effort of the season.
The Dragons led early as Rogers scored off a free position just 1:12 into the action for her 18th goal of the year. After the Blue Hens tied it up, Gerrie found Thiele cutting across the middle for a one-timer overhand goal that put the Dragons back on top, 2-1.
That would prove to be the final lead of the afternoon for Drexel, as the Blue Hens ran off five straight goals to grab a 6-2 lead midway through the first half. The Dragons responded by scoring four of the next five, including a free position by freshman Courtney Dietzel and scores from Thiele, Rogers and Nihill. Nihill's goal came off a pass from Nadia Pelham-Lacey, who finished the season with a team-best 52 points including at least one point in every game. That inched the Dragons back within one at 7-6, and after the Blue Hens widened their lead back up, Rogers found Gerrie for her 22nd goal of the year to make it an 8-7 game with 1:18 to go before the half. Drexel had an opportunity to tie things up in the final seconds, but could not get off a shot.
Delaware scored twice to begin the second half and give itself a three-goal lead, but Jamie Schneidereith cut the deficit to two with 20:10 to play, scoring off a feed from Nihill. It was the freshman's second goal of the year. The Blue Hens once again had a response, scoring three straight before Pelham-Lacey netted her team-best 34th goal of the season with 15:15 to play, a score that proved to be the final one of the season for the Dragons.
