Daranijo's OT Goal Lifts Men's Soccer, 1-0 at Northeastern

BOSTON – After a promising start to the 2018 season, the Drexel men's soccer team found itself in a precarious position heading into Saturday's match on the road at Northeastern. Nothing was settled in terms of the Colonial Athletic Association final standings on the field in Boston, but the Dragons got three points they desperately needed when Laolu Daranijo finished a pass from Kwesi Allen in the 98th minute to provide a golden goal for the Dragons in a 1-0 victory.
The win was the Dragons' first at Northeastern since 1997, when the teams were both members of the America East.
Drexel now has seven points in league action, tied with the Huskies for fifth place. The Dragons are assured at least a two-point cushion over seventh-place William & Mary for the final playoff spot following Saturday's action.
Days after seeing a first-minute goal against Delaware fail to stand up as the Dragons' offense managed just two shots, things were different on Saturday. The Dragons posted 14 shots including six on goal, but could not find the back of the net until late in the first overtime. Finally, the Dragons' drought was ended when Kwesi Allen sent a cross to Daranijo at the back post, and the sophomore finished it for his second goal of the season.
Allen took a game-high six shots, three of which tested Northeastern goalkeeper Chandler Cree. Cree finished with five saves, while his counterpart Stephen Kopsachilis was called upon to make just two saves in his fifth shutout of the year. The Dragons' defense held Northeastern to nine total shots, with just those two – one each in the first and second halves – going on goal.
The Dragons will now have a non-conference home test on Tuesday evening when they host Princeton at 6 p.m. They will then head to William & Mary for one final CAA test, with that game set to get underway in Williamsburg next Saturday at 7 p.m.
