WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Drexel men's soccer team suffered a significant blow to its postseason hopes on Saturday as the Dragons fell at William & Mary, 2-1. The game concluded the Colonial Athletic Association for the Dragons, who currently hold a tiebreaker for the sixth and final playoff spot in the conference but will have to sit and wait to see if they will earn a bid to the CAA Championships.
Drexel, which came into the game tied with Northeastern for fifth place and two points ahead of William & Mary, fell behind in the 27th minute when Cole Smith scored his first of the year off a pass from Antonio Bustamante. The Dragons quickly responded, however, when Kwesi Allen put home his fourth of the year 10 minutes later, heading in a ball off a free kick by Neil Boyal. The Tribe went ahead for good in the 44th minute when, just before halftime, Graham Guidry tallied his second of the season off feeds from Julian Ngoh and Marcel Berry.
The loss finalizes the Dragons' conference season with seven league points, leaving them tied with Northeastern for the sixth and final playoff spot. The Huskies have two games remaining, and would need to lose both at Delaware on Saturday and at home against UNCW next Tuesday in a makeup game postponed from its original date due to Hurricane Florence. Drexel would also need the College of Charleston to earn no more than two total points in its remaining games at Hofstra and at William & Mary.
While the Dragons will have to await their CAA postseason fate, they will have a chance to play for a championship on Wednesday evening at Vidas Field when they host Saint Joseph's at 6 p.m. With a win, Drexel would clinch a share of the Philadelphia Soccer Six crown. The game will be preceded by the team's annual Senior Day ceremony honoring Drexel's seven-man senior class.
