UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team could not get a signature win on its resume on Wednesday afternoon as the Dragons fell at No. 17 Penn State, 22-9. The game was close early as Drexel kept up in a frenetic opening 10 minutes, but Penn State closed the first half on a 7-1 run and never looked back.
Karson Harris put together her second-consecutive four-goal game to lead the Dragons. She added five draw controls and four ground balls. As a team, Drexel hung with the Nittany Lions in the draw circle, dropping that category by an 18-15 margin. Rachel Warden won seven draws to lead Drexel, while Maggie Stetson added three. Colleen Grady scored twice with an assist, while Caroline Cummings, Lucy Schneidereith and Danielle Senour scored one apiece and Cassidy Delaney dished out an assist. Zoe Bennett stopped 11 shots in net, though she allowed 18 during her time in the contest.
The Dragons got on the board first. After a defensive stop off the opening draw, Drexel worked the ball in tight where Cassidy Delaney found Caroline Cummings for the opening score.
Penn State responded with four straight goals, but Drexel pulled back within two when Lucy Schneidereith scored off a free position with 24:11 to play in the first half. Three more Nittany Lions goals quickly made it 7-2, but Karson Harris responded with two goals in the span of 14 seconds to make it a 7-4 game with 19:25 to play in the opening half.
After 11 goals were scored in the game's first 10:35, none lit up the scoreboard for the next 6:43. Unfortunately for the Dragons, they missed a couple of opportunities to creep closer and it was Penn State that finally ended the drought, with Shannon Moore sparking a quick 3-0 Nittany Lion run.
Danielle Senour gave Drexel its last goal of the first half with 9:37 to play, leaving the Dragons trailing by five, 10-5. Just 35 ticks later, Penn State responded with the first of eight straight goals that essentially iced the game away.
After a goalie change brought Sigourney Heerink in for Drexel, Harris ended the Penn State run with 18:25 to play, 21:12 of game time after Senour's goal. Her third goal of the day was set up by Colleen Grady, who followed less than two minutes later with a marker of her own, set up by Alex Beilman.
Drexel's scoring run continued with Harris' fourth goal of the afternoon with 13:34 to go, pulling the Dragons within 10 at 18-8, but Penn State ended the run just over a minute later.
What little remaining doubt there was as to the outcome was erased as Penn State scored three in a row to negate Drexel's run. Grady scored a late goal diving in from the left with 2:57 to play, but it was too late for any serious comeback attempt.
The Dragons will get back to action on Sunday when they host Monmouth at Vidas Field. That game gets underway at 1 p.m.
