HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Drexel University field hockey team (2-7, 1-0 CAA) picked up a road win in its CAA opener over the Hofstra University Pride (4-6, 0-1 CAA) on Friday afternoon from Hempstead, N.Y. by a final score of 1-0.
Freshman Isabel Jacobs broke through for the Dragons in the third quarter to score what would be the eventual game winner in the low scoring affair. The conference battle proved to be a defensive effort as shots were limited, especially in the first half.
The first half featured just three shots and one corner for the Dragons while Drexel's defense held Hofstra to just one shot and zero corners in the opening 30 minutes as the tilt was scoreless heading into halftime.
Jacobs notched her first collegiate goal late in the third quarter to put Drexel up, 1-0. The freshman took the shot down the middle of the circle to beat the Hofstra goalkeeper.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Hadfield made her only save in the third quarter as she earned her first collegiate win in shutout fashion as the DU defense helped thwart the Pride's offensive output.
With 4:39 left to play, a five-minute yellow card was issued to Hofstra's Djuna Slort which gave the Dragons a player advantage for the remainder of the game.
Play was stopped with 2:06 with some confusion over the penalty time. After it was all sorted out, the Pride pulled its goalkeeper for the extra position player. Drexel maintained control for most of the final minutes to hold on for the win.
In total, Drexel led shots 9-4 while Hofstra led corners, 4-3.
