RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Drexel wrestling team ended its two-day California trip with a 23-15 victory at California Baptist on Friday night. Wrestling for the third time in two days, the Dragons (5-3) won six of 10 bouts over the Lancers (2-2) and logged bonus points in three matches.
Drexel gained an easy 6-0 advantage as No. 17 Ebed Jarrell picked up a forfeit victory at 165. Michael O'Malley, the 31st-ranked 174-pounder, won the first contested match of the dual by toppling Jacob Cooper with a 12-8 decision. A high-scoring first period saw O'Malley score six of the first seven points en route to a 12-6 advantage after the opening three minutes. O'Malley was one of two Dragons to go undefeated in the Golden State.
California Baptist won two of the next three weight classes to pull back into the match. Garrett Strang defeated Owen Brooks by an 8-3 decision at 184 pounds. Bryan McLaughlin then bested Arick Lopez at 197 pounds, winning with a 6-3 decision. McLaughlin never trailed in the bout, grabbing an early 4-1 edge then holding off Lopez.
A Lancer pin at heavyweight brought CBU to within three points as 12-9, but the Dragons won the next three. Two of the three Drexel victories came by major decision, giving the Dragons some much-appreciated breathing room.
A hot-starting Antonio Mininno downed Keanu Perez by 7-4 decision in the 125-pound match. Mininno led 7-1 early in the third period.
Chandler Olson collected his third win on the California trip with an 11-1 major decision over Christian Nunez at 133 pounds. Leading only 2-0 after the first period, Olson surged ahead with six points in the second before securing his bonus point with a takedown in the third period.
Tyler Williams grabbed the first nine points of the 141-pound tilt and cruised to an 11-2 major decision over Adam Velasquez. Velasquez did not score a point until the final half-minute of the third period.
The Lancers closed out the dual with back-to-back decision victories. AJ Raya topped Julian Flores, 6-2, at 149 pounds. Felix Belga and Zach Rowe battled to a 3-3 draw after three periods, sending the match into sudden victory. Rowe scored the decisive takedown early in the first overtime period.
Drexel ushers in the new year at the Southern Scuffle Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Dragons return to dual competition with an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association road bout at American on Jan. 11.
