Schneidereith Powers Women's Lacrosse's 11-7 Win at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Drexel junior Lucy Schneidereith had a career day on Saturday, scoring five goals as the Dragons notched their first victory of the season, 11-7 at Iona. She added an assist and four ground balls as the Dragons never trailed in their first victory under new head coach Jill Batcheller.
Courtney Dietzel put together a hat trick as she and Schneidereith combined to outscore the Gaels on their own on Saturday. Colleen Grady netted what proved to be the game-winner and had three assists. Karson Harris also had three helpers as the Dragons assisted on all seven of their goals that were scored during the course of play. She also collected three draw controls, as did Jamie Schneidereith and Caroline Cummings. Schneidereith added a pair of caused turnovers on the defensive end. Marah Hayes tallied her second goal of the year and Maggie Stetson added her first. Meanwhile, Zoe Bennett came up with 13 saves, one shy of her career high and her most in a victory.
Dietzel got the Dragons on the board early on with her third goal of the season and first of the day, finishing off a feed from Harris less than two minutes into the action. Despite the fast start, both teams were slow to get rolling offensively. Iona tied things up three minutes later and Drexel retook the lead on Hayes' free position goal with 20:01 to play in the first half.
After the Gaels re-knotted it more than seven-and-a-half minutes later, Lucy Schneidereith took control. She scored the game's next four goals, starting at the 11:38 mark of the first half off a pass by Grady. Less than a minute later, Harris found Schneidereith to give Drexel a 4-2 lead. Neither team would light up the scoreboard for nearly nine minutes, but with 1:56 to go before halftime Grady once again fed Schneidereith for a score that made it a 5-2 game, which is where it stood as the teams headed for the locker rooms.
With 27:01 to go in the second half, Schneidereith completed her solo 4-0 run with a free position goal, giving the Dragons a 6-2 cushion. Not content to do all the scoring, she then dished it off to Stetson, assisting on the senior's first goal of the year with 21:10 remaining.
The Gaels got back on the board with a pair of goals midway through the second half, but any hopes of a comeback were thwarted when Grady scored with 14:43 to play on another eight-meter shot. Only 13 seconds later, Grady once again set things up with a pass to Dietzel, making it a 9-4 game with 14:30 to play.
Schneidereith capped her day with 8:04 to play when Harris found her for a fifth goal, a man-up goal, that made it 10-5. Four minutes later, Dietzel wrapped up the Dragons' scoring and finished off her own hat trick with a free position goal.
The Dragons will remain on the road for their next game, a trip to Georgetown next Saturday. That game begins at 3 p.m.
