RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Facing one of the top scoring defenses in the nation so far this season, the Drexel women's lacrosse team was not daunted as it went to Manhattan and defeated the host Jaspers, 13-7. The Dragons' 13 goals were the most given up by Manhattan all season as the Dragons ended what had been a six-game winning streak for the Jaspers heading into Tuesday's matchup.
Karson Harris led the way for Drexel, pouring in a career high five goals with an assist in the win. Harris converted on three free position attempts joining Lucy Schneidereith and Colleen Grady as the third Dragon to boast a five-goal game this season. Harris also picked up a career-best seven ground balls and won four draw controls.
Maggie Stetson scored twice with an assist. Caroline Cummings added a pair of goals and matched Harris' seven ground balls, causing a pair of turnovers as well. Colleen Grady had a goal and an assist as did Jamie Schneidereith, with Grady winning four draws. Hayleigh Simpson and Courtney Dietzel each netted a goal and Cassidy Delaney added an assist to round out the Dragons' scoring column.
Harris and Grady each won four draws but it was Bridget Boyle who led the way with five as Drexel outdid the Jaspers 15-7 in that category. Meanwhile, Rachel Warden caused three Manhattan turnovers and Zoe Bennett had five saves in her third victory of the year.
Drexel struck first, with Stetson finding Harris just 50 seconds into the action to make it a 1-0 game. The Jaspers had a quick response, though, scoring less than a minute later to even things up.
That game-tying goal was nearly the only offense Manhattan put up in the opening half. Drexel controlled the game for most of the opening 30 minutes, scoring the game's next six goals before the Jaspers finally got back on the board with 31 seconds to go. Before that, though, Harris scored twice more, with Cummings adding a pair of goals of her own and Grady and Dietzel adding scores to make it a 7-1 game.
The Dragons' seven first-half goals were the most any Manhattan opponent had scored in a full game during the Jaspers' six-game winning streak.
Manhattan came out of the locker room looking to climb back into the game, and scored twice to cut the Drexel lead to 7-4 with 25:49 to play. Harris had an answer, though, converting on the free position just over a minute later. Harris added her assist with 22:17 to go when she found Jamie Schneidereith to make it a 9-4 game.
The score stood at 10-6 with 16:22 to play when Grady fed Stetson for the senior's second goal of the afternoon, a score that sparked a 3-0 Drexel run which put the game out of reach for the Jaspers. Appropriately, it was capped by a Harris eight-meter score making it 13-6 with 9:32 to go. The Jaspers would add one more, but could not build any significant comeback attempt as the Dragons wrapped up the victory.
The Dragons will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they visit UMBC at 3 p.m. That will be the final non-conference road trip of the year for Drexel, which will host Central Connecticut and Robert Morris to wrap up March before opening CAA action in April.
