Women's Lacrosse Pushes No. 12 Penn But Falls, 12-10

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's lacrosse team threw a scare into No. 12 Penn on Tuesday afternoon at Franklin Field, but ultimately came up short, falling 12-10. The Dragons (2-3) scored the first four goals of the game before seeing its offense sputter as Penn (5-0) used a pair of decisive scoring runs to escape with the victory.
Cassidy Delaney had a goal and three assists for a team-best four points in the loss. Maggie Stetson and Karson Harris each scored a pair of goals, and Colleen Grady put up a goal and an assist. Courtney Dietzel, Caroline Cummings and Lucy and Jamie Schneidereith scored one goal apiece.
Zoe Bennett made 13 saves in the loss, a number of which were at close range with the game very much in doubt. She added two ground balls and a caused turnover as the reigning CAA Defensive Player of the Week got a strong start towards a potential repeat of the honor. Drexel's defense played well overall, with Harris' four caused turnovers leading the way. She added four draw controls and three ground balls. Jamie Schneidereith added two draws and Peighton Bement had one, while Grady, Cummings, and Katie Pappas each picked up a pair of ground balls.
The game could not have gotten off to a better start for the Dragons, who scored the first four goals of the afternoon to take a 4-0 lead just seven minutes in. Four different players scored for Drexel in the run, with Lucy Schneidereith getting things started just 49 seconds into the game. On Drexel's next trip into the offensive end, Colleen Grady found herself with the ball and the shot clock expiring. She spun around a defender and deposited it into the net on a low shot to make it 2-0. Maggie Stetson and Cassidy Delaney scored soon thereafter and the Quakers were forced to call a timeout.
The Dragons' early run was aided on the defensive end by three point-blank saves made by the current CAA Defensive Player of the Week, Zoe Bennett. Though the offense slowed its pace after the Penn timeout, Drexel's defense kept up the pressure, forcing a pair of failed clears. When Penn did get into the offensive zone at last, the Dragons got another save by Bennett, this one on an eight-meter shot.
Penn finally broke through with 15:36 to go in the first half, a goal which seemed to relieve the pressure on the favored Quakers. They would rattle off five in a row before Karson Harris scored to even things up with 10:22 to play in the half, a full 12:38 after the Dragons' last score.
Penn would never trail again, though it would be a while before the Quakers could get anything resembling a comfortable lead. The Dragons had answers trailing 5-4, 6-5, 7-6 and 8-7 before Penn managed to score four straight to build a 12-8 lead with 15:06 to play. Though that would prove to be the end of the Quakers' offensive attack, Drexel was also held off the scoreboard for nearly 10 more minutes before Stetson broke through with her second of the afternoon to make it a 12-9 game with 5:32 to play. Delaney fed Jamie Schneidereith for a goal with 2:46 to play and the Dragons would get the ball back later with an opportunity to make it a one-goal game, but Krissy Kowalski came up with one of just three saves she made on the afternoon to end the threat.
The Dragons return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Villanova at Vidas Field. That game is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
