Women’s Lacrosse Drops Nonconference Contest to Villanova
3/9/2019 3:45:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA – A balanced scoring attack was not enough to overcome an early deficit for the Drexel women's lacrosse team, which fell to Villanova on Saturday at Vidas Field, 13-9. Eight different Dragons scored goals, but the Wildcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead and used a five-goal run in the second half to thwart a Dragons comeback attempt as they never trailed in the contest.
Cassidy Delaney scored twice, with seven others adding a goal apiece. Maggie Stetson and Courtney Dietzel each contributed a goal and an assist. Dietzel and Hayleigh Simpson each added a pair of draws as the Dragons were outdone 18-6 in that category on Saturday. Zoe Bennett added eight saves in goal.
Villanova opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game, but Delaney netted the first of her two less than two minutes later to pull the Dragons even. The Wildcats responded by rattling off four straight, including three in five minutes, to take hold with a 5-1 lead. Drexel would be kept off the scoreboard for nearly 19 minutes before Dietzel fed Caroline Cummings to make it a 5-2 contest.
It was 6-3 at the break, with Colleen Grady scoring her only goal of the afternoon with 1:54 to go before halftime. The Dragons came out firing in the second half and took advantage of a Villanova penalty to score twice in 11 seconds, at 28:32 and 28:21. Dietzel was first, followed by Claire Jarema as the Dragons pulled back within a goal at 6-5.
Having weathered the penalty with the lead still theirs, the Wildcats broke the game open with five consecutive goals in 4:33, grabbing an 11-5 cushion with 19:37 to go. Though the Dragons answered back with three straight of their own - put home by Marah Hayes, Karson Harris and Delaney - that would be as close as Drexel would climb as the Wildcats allowed just a Stetson goal over the final 10:18 of play, scoring twice themselves to seal the victory.
The Dragons return to action on Tuesday when they open a two-game road trip at Manhattan. Game time in Riverdale, N.Y. is set for 4 p.m.
