Comeback Effort Stalls for Women's Lacrosse at Elon, 13-11

ELON, N.C. – It was nearly a dramatic come-from-behind victory for the Drexel women's lacrosse team in its Colonial Athletic Association opener on Friday night, but the Dragons' comeback bid stalled in the final minutes as the Dragons fell to Elon in North Carolina, 13-11. After trailing by as many as six goals, the Dragons came back to even things up on three separate occasions, but the Phoenix netted the game's final two goals to avoid the collapse.
Cassidy Delaney led the way for Drexel's offensive attack with three goals and an assist. Colleen Grady scored twice and had an assist for three points, leaving her with 92 in her career in just 27 games. Caroline Cummings added a pair of goals, her first scores since adding two at Manhattan on Mar. 12. Karson Harris scored one with an assist and won eight draws, her third consecutive game with at least eight draws won after no Dragon had won that many in any game in the last five seasons. Maggie Stetson, Jamie Schneidereith and Courtney Dietzel all chipped in a goal, while Hayleigh Simpson won four draws for Drexel.
A slow start had Drexel looking up from a 5-0 hole with 20:56 still to play in the first half. Harris got the Dragons on the board 37 ticks later, but Elon added two more to make it a 7-1 game two minutes after that.
Goals from Grady, Delaney and Stetson kept Drexel within shouting distance, but the Phoenix led 9-4 when they scored with 10:40 to go in the half. That, however, would be Elon's last goal for nearly 25 minutes of game time as the Dragons slowly but surely got themselves back in the game.
Dietzel and Grady made it a 9-6 game before the halftime break, and after a scoreless first 8:41 of the second half, Delaney got Drexel back within two. A Cummings goal made it 9-8 with 19:59 to go, and Grady fed Schneidereith for her eighth goal of the season with 16:49 to play to pull the Dragons all the way back even at 9-9.
Elon broke out of its funk to take a 10-9 lead at the 15:46 mark, but Drexel once again pulled even on a Cummings goal with 15:12 to go. Again Elon edged back in front, but again the Dragons had an answer in the form of a Delaney goal that made it 11-11 with 12:03 to play.
That would prove to be the end of the push for the Dragons, however, as Elon eked out a goal seven minutes later and controlled possession down the stretch, netting an insurance goal with 1:41 on the clock.
The Dragons will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they visit William & Mary at 1 p.m., still in search of their first CAA win of the year.
