Daranijo, Donovan and Sanders Lead Men's Soccer to Shutout of George Mason
9/17/2019 9:01:00 PM | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Laolu Daranijo and Chris Donovan teamed up twice to scorer a pair of goals and Cameron Sanders made four saves in his first collegiate shutout as the Drexel men's soccer team defeated George Mason at Vidas Field on Tuesday night, 2-0. The win was the first shutout of the year for the Dragons and their second consecutive victory overall.
Daranijo scored the first goal of the game with an assist from Donovan, and Donovan netted the second off a Daranijo helper. George Mason put up a fight to try to mount a comeback, ultimately outshooting the Dragons 16-8, but Sanders and the Drexel defense kept the Patriots from finishing any of those looks.
Daranijo nearly got the Dragons on the board just over three minutes into the game when he gained control in the box with just George Mason keeper Andreas Varlas Tsaousis to beat. Daranijo did beat Tsaousis, but his shot rocketed off the bottom of the crossbar, pounding straight down into the turf in play, where the Patriots were able to clear it out of trouble.
Later in the first half, Daranijo made it count. The Dragons raced upfield, with Patrick Murphy and Francisco Rodrigues da Palma bringing the ball into the offensive end on the right side as they attacked. The ball was sent into Donovan in the middle, who ticked it over to Daranijo entering the box from the right of Tsaousis. His shot, low to the ground this time, went back across the goalkeeper's body and out of his reach as he netted his first of the season to give the Dragons a 1-0 edge.
In the 55th minute, the duo switched roles. Again Daranijo attacked the box from the right side, this time with possession as he weaved through defensive traffic. Cutting through the middle was Donovan, who got a head on Daranijo's cross and flicked it down, where it bounced past Tsaousis to make it a two-goal lead for the Dragons.
Drexel has now scored in eight consecutive games dating back to last season, its longest streak since an eight-game stretch spanning the end of 2013 and the beginning of the 2014 season.
The Dragons will remain at home for their next contest on Saturday when they take on William & Mary at 6 p.m. Drexel will be beginning a stretch which includes four Colonial Athletic Association contests in its next five games.
