PHILADELPHIA – Drexel women's soccer caps its nine-game non-conference schedule on Sunday with a 2 p.m. road match at Columbia that will air on ESPN+. The Dragons (4-2-2) have already clinched a winning non-conference record and are looking to add a final feather in their cap before beginning an arduous nine-game CAA slate.
THE DRAGONS LINEUP
Drexel scored in the 31st minute and held Seton Hall without a shot on goal in its 1-0 win over the Pirates at Vidas Field on Thursday night. Annalena O'Reilly collected the first marker of her collegiate career when Maggie Daeche and Melissa Lyon combined to find her at the far post following a corner kick.
Defensively, the Dragons conceded only four shot attempts and survived a close-range effort that struck the crossbar in the 10th minute. That near miss was the most dangerous moment of the night for Libby Baeza, who earned her second clean sheet in three matches.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Columbia (3-2-1) hosts NJIT on Friday night at 6 p.m. before welcoming Drexel to Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Sunday. Last time out, the Lions lost 1-0 to Hofstra on Sunday. In that match, the Pride out-shot Columbia, 12-4, and owned a 5-1 advantage in shots on target.
The Lions own an even goal differential this season – scoring eight times but conceding eight goals as well. Cayla Davis and Mallaika Tomar pace CU with two goals apiece, and Davis leads the Lions with five points.
Liz Matei has played all 560 minutes in goal for the Lions and owns a 1.29 goals against average. The freshman keeper has 26 saves to her name with a .765 save percentage.
Drexel and Columbia share a common opponent in Saint Joseph's. The Lions topped the Hawks, 2-1, on Sept. 12 on the strength of goals from Tomar and Davis.
THE SERIES
Sunday marks the third meeting in the all-time series. Columbia handed Drexel an 8-0 loss in 1994, the Dragons' first season as a varsity program. More recently, the two sides played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in 2018.
The Lions struck first in last season's match-up, scoring in the 33rd minute. CU held that lead for nearly 46 minutes before Shaelyn McCarty equalized after converting a Joanna Seca through ball from six yards out.
WHAT'S NEXT
CAA play begins with a bang for the Dragons, who must travel to Hofstra for a 7 p.m. match next Thursday. The Pride won the 2018 CAA Tournament and were named 2019 preseason favorites.
