Late Goal Not Enough as Men's Soccer Falls at Princeton, 3-1
9/24/2019 9:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – One streak continued but another came to an end as the Drexel men's soccer team fell at Princeton on Tuesday, 3-1. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak but extended the team's mark of 10 consecutive games with a goal scored as Yassine Elkahloun netted his first collegiate goal in the 87th minute.
Elkahloun's goal came on a free kick as the freshman curled a ball around a wall of Princeton defenders to put the Dragons on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the Tigers' cushion was comfortable enough by that point that the goal made little difference to the final result.
Princeton scored twice in the final seven minutes of the first half to build what proved to be an insurmountable lead. Martin Benjamin scored in the 39th minute, then Ryan Clare followed just 1:38 before halftime off a corner kick to make it a 2-0 game.
All of Princeton's goals were scored in the span of just 9:16 of game time, as Spencer Fleurant put the Tigers up 3-0 just 2:21 into the second half. Drexel could not fight back until Elkahloun's goal in the final minutes of play.
Elkahloun's goal did keep one impressive mark intact, as the Dragons have now scored in 10 consecutive games. That is just two games shy of the team's record under head coach Doug Hess, set in 2012 when the team scored at least once in 12 consecutive contests from Sept. 22 through Nov. 9.
Chris Donovan had three shots, two of which went on net, to lead the team. Kyle Tucker had a pair, and Cameron Sanders made three saves in goal during his first loss of the year.
Drexel will look to bounce back on Saturday when the Dragons return to Colonial Athletic Association play against James Madison in Harrisonburg. That game kicks off at 7 p.m.
