Women’s Lacrosse Dispatches Manhattan in Home Opener, 16-8

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's lacrosse team (1-1) defeated the Manhattan College Jaspers (1-2) in the Dragons' home opener by a final of 16-8 from Vidas Field on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. The win comes as the first of the season for DU.
HIGHLIGHTS
* Redshirt junior Lucy Schneidereith scored a career- and game-high seven goals on 10 shots. She converted two free-position attempts and scooped up two groundballs.
* Junior Colleen Grady notched four goals on five shots and two assists on the day for a six-point effort.
* Junior Karson Harris won a game-high eight draw controls and added a goal and two assists.
* Senior Jamie Schneidereith scored two goals on four shots and won three draw controls.
* Freshman Belle McHugh caused a team-high three Manhattan turnovers.
* Freshman Alex Wall tied for a game-high three groundballs. Five other Dragons had two groundballs.
* Sophomore Claire Jarema scored her second goal of the season in the first half.
* Freshman Cara Moreau scored her first collegiate goal in the second half.
* Freshman Corinne Bednarik tallied a game-high three assists in the win.
* Junior goalie Zoe Bennett (W, 1-1) made six stops on the day across all 60 minutes en route to her first win of the season.
* Drexel is now 11-0 all-time against Manhattan.
GAMEPLAY
First Half /
The Dragons scored 10 goals in the opening period, using two five-goal runs to take a seven-goal edge into the locker room. Drexel opened the affair on a 5-0 stretch as Lucy Schneidereith notched a hat trick in the opening five minutes. Manhattan then got two back off the stick of Alaina Burgess with 20:57 and 17:51 on the clock. Another five-goal DU stretch, including two more from Grady to bring her to three on the day and two from Lucy Schneidereith to cap her five-goal half, made it 10-2 in favor of the Dragons. The Jaspers scored with 26 seconds left in the half as DU led 10-3 after 30 minutes.
Second Half /
Grady started the scoring in the second half for the Dragons. After a Jasper goal, DU scored the next three to take a 14-4 lead for a running clock, starting at 21:18 with Harris' tally. Manhattan trimmed the deficit back down into single digits with a goal at 13:56. Drexel never regained the 10-goal margin but continued to maintain control of the contest. Manhattan's backup goalie, Caitie Pluta, was able to make six saves on the Dragons' 15 second-half attempts, which slowed the offensive output in the final 30 minutes. Moreau scored her first goal with 9:01 on the clock and Lucy Schneidereith finished the day with her seventh and the game's final with 9.1 to go as Drexel won, 16-8.
BY THE NUMBERS
* Drexel outshot Manhattan, 32-17, and limited the Jaspers to just five in the first half.
* The Dragons won the draw control battle, 19-7, with Harris' eight leading the way. Simpson (4), Bednarik (3) and Jamie Schneidereith (3) also contributed.
* Manhattan had 17 turnovers on the day with Drexel causing eight of them including a team-high three from McHugh.

Drexel continues its homestand with Georgetown University next Saturday, Feb. 22 from Vidas Field. Action starts at noon.
