Women’s Lacrosse Drops Close Season Opener on Road to No. 24 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE – The Drexel University women's lacrosse team (0-1) dropped its season opener to the No. 24 Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays (1-0) by a final of 13-11 in the Dragons' season opener on the road in Baltimore, Md.
HIGHLIGHTS
* DU stayed aggressive throughout the game, leading for a majority for the opening 45 minutes before a late three-goal stretch from Johns Hopkins tied it up and gave the Blue Jays the lead and win.
* Drexel led 7-6 at halftime thanks to a three-goal run for the Dragons in the final minutes of the first half.
* The Dragons had a two-goal lead with 19:19 left in the second half, 10-8, before Hopkins closed the game on a 5-1 run to win, 13-11.
* Junior Karson Harris scored a game-high four goals and added an assist for five points on the day, also tied for a game high. Three of her goals came on free-position attempts. She also won three draw controls and scooped up three groundballs.
* Junior Colleen Grady added two goals while freshman Corinne Bednarik tallied a goal and an assist in her collegiate debut.
* Four other Dragons also scored a goal: sophomore Hayleigh Simpson, senior Jamie Schneidereith, senior Courtney Dietzel and sophomore Claire Jarema.
* Simpson won a team-high four draw controls.
* Freshman Belle McHugh tied Harris for a team-high three groundballs. Seniors Rachel Warden and Caroline Cummings each had two.
* Junior goalie Zoe Bennett (L, 0-1) made 10 saves on the day.
GAMEPLAY
First Half /
Drexel jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first five minutes. Harris put away DU's first goal of the year before the junior assisted on Dietzel's goal less than a minute later. Jarema found the back of the cage 20 seconds after JHU's first goal, 3-1. The Blue Jays then scored four of the next five to take a 5-4 advantage with 10 minutes to play.
The Dragons put together a three-goal run with tallies from Bedarik, Simpson and Grady to give Drexel a 7-5 advantage. Badarik evened the score at 5-5 with her first collegiate goal before Simpson and Grady gave DU a two-goal edge. With 19 seconds left, Hopkins was able to get back within one at halftime, 7-6.
Second Half /
Grady tallied her second goal to put Drexel back up by two early in the second half, 8-6. Following two scores from the Blue Jays to tie it up, Harris notched back-to-back goals to give the Dragons some breathing room, 10-8. But over the final 16 minutes, JHU scored five of the last six goals to take the lead and win by the 13-11 final.
