Nine Dragons Score in a 15-3 Victory over Wagner

PHILADELPHIA. – Nine Dragons found the back of the net as Drexel defeated Wagner, 15-3 in its home opener on Wednesday at Vidas Field. Corinne Bednarik led the way with four goals and four assists, three coming in the first quarter. Alli VanSlyke, Caroline Senich, Kate Quinn, and Karli Dougherty, also contributed, each scoring their first career goals. Drexel improves to 2-0 on the season, while Wagner falls to 0-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Dragons were dominant in the midfield, going 15-15 on clears.
- Jenika Cuocco collected nine saves, allowing only three goals.
- The Dragons led the turnover battle 18-9.
- Drexel capitalized on Wagner's errors, going 4-7 on free-position shots throughout the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Allison Drake started things off for the Dragons, scoring first at the 10:46 mark. Drexel would then score five more goals in the quarter to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Bednarik looked in control early, scoring three of her four goals in the first. Kate Marano ended the quarter with back-to-back tallies just a minute apart.
- The Seahawks battled back at the start of the second quarter. Ella Marino and Sophia Colver each added a goal to make it 7-2 DU, at the half. Dougherty gave the Dragons their one lone goal in the frame.
- Drexel came out of the half hot, scoring four straight goals to take a commanding 11-2 lead. Fifth-year senior, VanSlyke added a score of her own in the quarter. After coming off a career high five ground balls against Binghamton, VanSlyke picked off the goalie's pass and hustled towards the Seahawks defense to fire a shot for her first career goal. Wagner scored late in the third to make it 11-3 Drexel.
- The Dragons tallied four more in the fourth quarter from goals by Drake, Anna Maria Gragnani, Kate Quinn and redshirt-freshman, Senich.
