BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Drexel softball team was upended in both games on the first day of the Runnin' Bulldog Classic, hosted by Gardner-Webb. The Dragons faced West Georgia in game one and was defeated, 15-1, then returned to Brinkley Softball Stadium to play Howard, and was defeated, 4-3.
Game One
Madison Taylor (0-1) started the game and went an inning. Natalie Alldred entered the game in relief and pitched four innings.
The top four in the lineup all checked in with at least a hit. Arianna Catillo picked up the first hit of her career. Izzy Alamillo, Mia Garza and Lily Meuninck were responsible for the three other hits.
Garza scored Drexel's lone run and Meuninck earned the RBI on a double in the bottom of the first.
UWG scored six runs in the first inning, before Drexel could score one. The Wolves scored four more in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Game Two
Violet Marta (0-1) went six innings and struck five batters out in the effort. Marta, who made her first collegiate start, only allowed three earned runs.
Castillo went 2-for-3 in game two and was picked up an RBI. Krizan finished 1-for-2 and drove in two runs. Annabelle Smink appeared as the designated player for Drexel and went 1-for-2 with two runs.
How It Happened
After conceding an unearned run in the first inning, Drexel was able to tie the game up in the third on a RBI single to left field by Krizan. But in the bottom of the third, Howard scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh Drexel hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with no outs. A walk by Alamillo loaded the bases for Castillo, who hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Krizan then hit another sacrifice fly to centerfield and advanced Alamillo, the tying run, to third with two outs. Howard was able to navigate the third out and stopped Drexel's comeback just short.
