Drexel Falls in Double Overtime to UConn, 10-9

STORRS, Conn. - The No. 24 Drexel women's lacrosse team went to double overtime with UConn, but came up short in a 10-9 final in Storrs, Conn. It was a heavily contested match up, with the game being tied on seven occasions. The Huskies scored two straight in the fourth quarter to end regulation, with Eve McGrogan hitting the back of the net in the first minute of the second overtime to put the contest away. Bridget Finley and Allison Drake each collected a hat trick as the Dragons drop to 0-1.
Drake got DU on the board first, sprinting around the UConn defender to record the first tally of the season. The Huskies then scored three straight to gain the 3-1 advantage in the first 15 minutes. Ellie Wall closed the period out with a goal in the final 48 seconds, bringing deficit down one.
Finley tied things up for the Dragons in the second, scoring her first of three goals on the day. The Huskies responded, picking up a pair of tallies in less than a minute to give UConn the 5-3 lead at the half.
The Dragons opened the second half hot, with Finley and Drake tallying back-to-back to tie the game at five. Both teams traded two more goals to make it seven apiece after three quarters.
Drexel snatched the lead back to begin the fourth, with Finley and Bea Buckley adding a pair to give DU the 9-7 lead. The Huskies marched bacon in the game in the final ten minutes. Karsyn Burnash pulled UConn to within one at the 10:06 mark. Rayea Davis followed, getting home for her third goal of the game.The Dragons had opportunities late, with three shots in the minute not getting through the net.
UConn gained the draw control to start the double overtime. Off the timeout, McGrogan drove down the middle in front of the cage to win it for the Huskies. Jenika Cuocco finished with eight saves with 18 on goal, while collecting seven ground balls.
The Dragons continue their road trip as they visit Wagner on Wednesday, February 12 on Long Island.
