STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The number two-seed Drexel Dragons will battle top-seeded Stony Brook for a shot at the CAA Championship on Saturday. Opening draw is set for 12:30. This is Drexel's second-consecutive CAA title game, and their fourth in five seasons. DU is looking for their first conference championships since the 2022 season.
About the Dragons
Drexel is 14-3 under Mary Semanik Head Coach Katie O'Donnell. The Dragons rolled over three-seed Delaware in the CAA Semifinal game on Thursday, 20-11. The Dragons matched the most goals scored in a single CAA postseason contest, tying the 20 scored by Loyola against American on April 16, 1993. The 20 tallies are also the most scored in a CAA semifinal game.
Jenika Cuocco was named CAA Goalkeeper of the Year for the third-straight season. The Sound Beach, N.Y. native is the first player in conference history to win three consecutive major awards. She is also the first to win four major awards, adding her Rookie of the Year award in the 2023 season.
Bea Buckley scored six points, with two goals and four assists to mark 100 points for her career. The sophomore has team-leading 67 points on the year, tallying 28 times with 39 assists. The Philadelphia native is just three dishes from the single-season program record, held by Corinne Bednarik and Colleen Grady.
Allison Drake leads Drexel in goals, hitting the back of the net 54 times. The graduate student earned her first All-CAA First Team honor, collecting a Second-Team nomination last season. Drake has been a consistent threat for the Dragons offensive. She has a shooting percentage of .635, and was 8th best in the NCAA during the regular season.
Overall, seven Dragons were named to All-CAA Teams. Drexel tied with Stony Brook for the most selections of any conference team.
About Stony Brook
The Seawolves are 14-4 this season, posting another perfect record in the CAA under Head Coach Joe Spallina. The Seawolves are back-to-back CAA Champions, and are undefeated in regular season and postseason conference play since joining the Coastal in 2023.
Stony Brook received three major honors in the annual CAA postseason awards, including Coach, Midfielder, and Defender of the Year. Isabella Caporuscio earned a unanimous selection as the CAA's Midfielder of the Year. On the defensive side, the sophomore had 49 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers, along with 72 draw controls. She was just as dangerous on the other side of the field, collecting 63 points with 44 goals and 19 assists.
Her teammate, Avery Hines, was awarded Defensive Player of the Year award. Hines was a member of the Tewaaraton Watch List and was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week seven times this season. She was also a Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-America. The senior has picked up 48 ground balls, 61 caused turnovers, and 24 draw controls.
Charlotte Wilmoth is the Seawolves leading scorer. She tallied 59 goals and 25 dished for 84 points. She took home a pair of CAA Player of the Week awards, finishing the regular season top-six in points per game (2nd), goals per game (3rd), and shots per game (6th).
The Series
The Dragons are still searching for their first win over the Seawolves. Drexel is 0-7 against the team from Long Island. DU fell short in a late comeback earlier this season, 13-17.
