Drexel Falls Late to Fairfield, 10-9

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Drexel's comeback effort came up short as the women's lacrosse team fell to Fairfield Saturday afternoon, 10-9. The Dragons rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the first quarter, but a go-ahead goal in the final five minutes secured the win for Fairfield. With the loss, Drexel moves to 2-3 on the season.
Bea Buckley led the Dragons in scoring with five points, adding a pair of goals and three assists. Lucy Daily recorded a career-best nine saves in just her fifth collegiate contest.
The Stags opened the game with four consecutive goals, all by different players. Fairfield held Drexel scoreless until the final minute of the first quarter. Kate Quinn broke through with a free-position goal, as Buckley converted on her own free-position opportunity with just eight seconds remaining in the period.
The Dragons carried their momentum into the second quarter, opening the frame with a pair of goals. Buckley threaded a pass to Annie Madden in the middle as the freshman fired it into the back of the net just 40 seconds into the quarter. Buckley followed up with another score, ripping a shot around the Fairfield defender through the left corner of the cage. Each team traded a goal to finish the half tied at five.
Fairfield took an 8-7 lead into the fourth quarter as the two teams exchanged goals throughout the third. Elena Bontatibus and Karli Dougherty each found the back of the net for Drexel. The Stags scored with 38 seconds left in the third, followed up by another at the 12:26 mark of the fourth to take a two goal advantage, their largest lead since the first quarter.
Drexel answered with a pair of strikes, as Ellie Wall and Teagan Quinn each found the back of the net to tie the score at nine. The decisive goal came at the 5:29 mark, when Tessa Caputo collected a pass and finished with an underhand shot to secure the game-winner. Caputo finished with seven points, including four in the second half.
After a late turnover behind the Fairfield net, Drexel forced one of its own near midfield with just 10 seconds remaining. Maddie Kane got a shot off in the closing moments, but the Stags' goalkeeper made the save to seal the victory.
