PHILADELPHIA — Six consecutive goals proved too much for the Dragons to overcome, as Drexel fell to Stony Brook, 12-7, under the lights at Vidas Field on Friday. Bea Buckley scored the go ahead goal late in the third quarter, but the Seawolves responded by shutting out the Dragons over the final 16 and a half minutes to seal the win.
Lucy Dailey collected a career-high 12 saves in front of the cage for Drexel. After netting her first career goal last time out against William & Mary, Hailey Kluepfel caught fire with three consecutive goals in the third quarter.
Drexel started out the scoring to begin the first quarter, as Elena Bontatibus connected on the free-position. Stony Brook responded with three in a row. Mirabella Altebrando found Katie Walsh on the player-up who dashed in front of the net for the strike. Hayden Eisfeld followed up with a pair to extend the lead to 3-1. After a Stony Brook Card, Mary Claire Heubeck tallied the Dragons second free-petition goal of the goal to end the quarter down one. Overall, there were ten cards given in the first quarter alone.
Stony Brook opened the second quarter with another three-goal run, this time over a 2:15 span. Drexel answered in a big way, holding the Seawolves scoreless for the next 30 minutes while rallying off five straight goals of their own.
The Dragons got on the board at the 9:25 mark, as Katherine Senich lofted a pass over the defender to find Teagan Quinn cutting down the middle. Bea Buckley followed by connecting with Hailey Kluepfel in front for just her second career goal, pulling the deficit to just 6-4.
The run continued into the third quarter, as Kluepfel ran through the defender and poked it through the bottom right pocket for the goal. The redshirt junior then collected the hat trick, catching the pass from Heubeck over the net for the equalizer. Buckley finished the run with the go-ahead score to give the Dragons just their second lead of the night.
The Seawolves finally ended the drought at the 14:19 mark of the fourth quarter, as Keira Marin scored on the player-up to tie the game at 7-7. Stony Brook kept on the attack from there, as four different Seavolves rattled off strikes as Stony Brook secured the win.
The Dragons fall to 3-6 on the season, and 0-2 in conference play. Drexel will return home to Vidas Field next time out to battle Elon on Saturday, March 28 as DU will celebrate Senior Day. The opening draw will drop at 12 p.m.
