TOWSON, Md. — The Drexel women's lacrosse team came up short against Towson on Saturday afternoon, 14-12. The Dragons scored five straight in the third quarter to tie the game after trailing 10-5 at the half, but the Tigers finished on a 5-2 run to secure the important conference win.
Bea Buckley led Drexel in scoring with two goals and two assists. Freshman Maddie Kane recorded the first multi-goal game of her career, tallying twice while adding an assist. The Dragons are now 4-9 on the season with a 1-4 record in the CAA.
The Tigers quickly got on the board to start the game, scoring just 13 seconds into the contest. The Dragons won the opening draw but quickly turned it over, allowing Towson to capitalize on a fast break downfield for the early goal. Drexel soon tied it up at 1-1 after Mary Claire Heubeck found Hailey Kluepfel for the score. Towson added another on the free-position before Bea Buckley found Teagna Quinn down the alley just 36 seconds later.
The Tigers finished the quarter on a 3-1 run, including two goals in a span of 36 seconds to take a 5-3 lead after the first. Towson added three more to start the second, with a pair coming from free-position to cap a 4-0 run.
Elena Bontatibus ended the streak at the 5:39 mark off the free-position opportunity before Annie Madden added another. Buckley's shot was saved, but Kate Quinn quickly forced the turnover and fed it to the freshman for the score. Towson ended the half with two more goals as Gabby Bjugan collected the first-half hat trick to extend the lead to 10-5 after 30 minutes.
The Dragons began the 5-0 run as Kane netted her first of the day on a free-position. She then found Buckley, who wrapped around the net and finished in front of the cage. Ellie Wall followed with a pair of free-position goals, and Buckley added the equalizer on another free-position attempt. Drexel scored five goals in just over 10 minutes during the run, with four coming from free-position opportunities.
Towson ended the run at the 3:35 mark, as Valerie Thompson dived down the middle, faking the shot and putting it away for the go-ahead score. Luca DeMaio followed, firing from outside the 8-meter line and hitting the bottom left pocket.
The Dragons pulled within one to start the fourth quarter on the woman-up. Buckley found Madden wide open in front of the cage, finishing just before being knocked to the turf. The Tigers regained a two-goal advantage on a player-up opportunity of their own with 11 minutes left. Kane collected her second of the day off a feed from Heubeck, cutting around the cage and finishing inside before hitting the deck to pull Drexel back within one.
DeMaio delivered the dagger for the Tigers, scoring a behind-the-shoulder goal to push the lead back to two. Neither team found the back of the net over the final eight minutes. Drexel fired off five shots during that stretch, with four being turned aside by the Towson goalkeeper.
The Dragons return to action in Philadelphia on Wednesday, April 15 against Monmouth at 3 p.m.
