WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Drexel softball team split two games at the Capital Invitational on Saturday, defeating St. John's 11-6 before falling to the host George Washington, 6-0. Jenn Reading and Maddison Timoteo homered in the victory over the Red Storm as Tara Konopka struck out a career-high 11 in her fifth victory. Shelby Taylor struck out six in the loss to the Colonials in the nightcap.
Drexel trailed 3-1 early in the first game to St. John's, with the run coming courtesy of Timoteo's first home run of the season. With one out in the fourth inning, up stepped Reading, who launched her second homer of the year pulled right down the left field line. Down just one, the Dragons broke out for four unearned runs in the fifth. After Timoteo singled to lead off the inning, Rose Portiolli put down a sacrifice bunt towards third base. Unfortunately for the Red Storm, their third baseman threw the ball away trying to get Portiolli at first, allowing her to reach safely as Timoteo moved up to second base.
Comfort Ahonkhai then put down a successful sacrifice bunt that moved both runners up a station. After Hanna Parrish flew out, Maggy Fermo walked to load the bases. Up stepped Sylvia Llamas, who laced a single back up the middle. Timoteo and Portiolli scored, giving Drexel its first lead of the day. Reading followed, roping a single to the gap in left-center field. Fermo came home, and Llamas came all the way around from first to score as Drexel took a 6-3 lead.
The Red Storm responded with three runs in their half of the fifth inning to tie the game. In the sixth, Jess O'Hara walked and came around to score on a base hit off the bat of Ahonkhai, putting the Dragons back on top 7-6.
Drexel broke the game wide open with four runs in the seventh inning. Again, three of the four runs were unearned after Fermo reached on an error. She moved up to second on a passed ball, Sylvia Llamas singled to move her up to third.
Forcing the action, Llamas took off for second base as the St. John's pitch that ended up going all the way back to the backstop. Fermo raced home, and Llamas moved around to third. Reading then walked, and pinch runner Bianca Iamurri swiped second base.
Jill Popek was up next, reaching on a fielder's hoice as Llamas came home to score the Dragons' ninth run. St. John's was unable to get Iamurri at third, and after Popek stole second, consecutive passed balls charged to the Red Storm catcher plated both Iamurri and Popek.
Meanwhile, Konopka struck out a career-high 11, including striking out the side in the first and sixth innings, as she earned the victory.
In the second game, George Washington took an early 3-0 lead courtesy of a three-run home run by Autumn Taylor in the first inning. The Dragons never recovered, as they managed just one hit - a Shelby Taylor single in the seventh inning - and fell, 6-0.
