CATONSVILLE., Md. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell at UMBC on Wednesday, 17-10. Lacey Aghazarian scored three goals to lead a Drexel attack which had its most productive day in any of the team's six road games. Emily Duffey and Joelle Hartke each added a pair of goals.
The Dragons' loss was their fifth in a row as they remain winless on the road this season. The game completed a five-game road trip for the Dragons (1-6).
Freshman Nadia Pelham-Lacey got Drexel off to a good start, scoring less than a minute into the game to put the Dragons on top, 1-0. It was her fifth score of the season. UMBC responded with three goals over the next eight minutes to take a lead it would not give up.
The Dragons cut the deficit to one when Aghazarian scored her first of the afternoon with 17:01 to play in the opening half. That would be the end of Drexel's scoring in the stanza, however, as the Retrievers scored five unanswered to seize control of the contest.
Drexel got back into the game right after halftime, with senior Joelle Hartke taking control and scoring twice in the span of 2:19. That slashed the Retrievers' lead to 8-4. That would be as close as Drexel would get in the second half. UMBC scored five of the next six goals, with Milan White's sixth of the season sandwiched in the midst of that Retriever spree.
Lacey Aghazarian netted goals two and three of the game, her team-leading eighth and ninth of the season. The first game with 13:01 to play, and the second at the 12:14 mark. The game was her second-straight multi-goal effort.
After UMBC scored four more times to put the game out of reach, Drexel closed with three straight scores, getting into double figures for the first time since its 11-9 win over Columbia on Feb. 22. Emily Duffey netted the first two, her third and fourth of the season. The second, with just under a minute to play, was assisted by Emily Kellett. Seconds later, Kellett would add a goal of her own, her fourth, to close out the scoring.
Drexel got its only win of the season thus far at home, and it will have plenty of opportunities to improve on that record as the Dragons start a five-game homestand on Saturday at noon against Villanova. The Dragons will not be on the road again until a trip to Towson on April 10.
