The Drexel men's lacrosse team heads to the Big Apple this weekend to face St. John's in a non-conference game. The Dragons (2-4) will be looking for their third straight win. The Dragons are coming off an 11-8 victory against Bryant on Saturday. Ryan Belka, this week's CAA Player of the Week, scored four goals and handed out two assists in the win. Cole Shafer added three points as the Dragons rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to win their second straight game. Jimmy Joe Granito made nine saves to pick up the win in the cage for Drexel.
Belka is off to a good start in his senior season. The midfielder is tied for third in the CAA in assists per game and tied for fifth in points per contest. He has scored 12 goals and handed out 10 assists for 22 points. Belka has seven goals and four assists in his last two games. Shafer has 11 goals which places him second on the team. Robert Frazee has six goals and nine points, while Jules Raucci and Mason Pynn have each scored five times. Nick Saputo leads the CAA in ground balls per game and ranks fifth in the country in that category. He is also 14th in the nation in face-off win percentage at .596.
The Red Storm (1-5) have dropped four in a row. They started their losing skid with three straight one-goal losses, including an 11-10 loss to Yale, who enters this week ranked sixth in the nation. Last Saturday, the Red Storm lost to top-ranked Syracuse, 14-6. Their only win came against Stony Brook. Eric DeJohn is off to a fine start for Saint John's. He has 16 goals and 10 assists for 26 points. The junior leads the team in all three categories. Stefan Diachenko has 11 goals and is tied with Jason DeBenedictis for second on the club with 13 points. Joseph Danaher and Harry Burke have split time in the cage. Both players have made 33 saves and both have seen time in four games this season.
The Dragons lead the series, 8-1. Last year, Shafer scored five times and Ben McIntosh addeed six points as Drexel defeated St. John's on a frigid afternoon at Vidas Field, 16-11. Nick Saputo had a big day for Drexel, winning 22 face-offs.
