Philadelphia - The Drexel men's lacrosse team will close the regular season on Saturday when long-time rival Towson comes to Vidas Field. It will be the last home appearance for Ryan Belka, Matt Clark, Mitch de Snoo, T.J. Foley, Paul Harrison and Nick Saputo as the Dragons celebrate Senior Day prior to the game.
The Dragons are coming off a 12-9 loss at UMass last Saturday. Drexel tied the game up after trailing by three goals, but the Minutemen scored five straight goals to take control of the game. With the loss, the Dragons' fate is not in their hands. Even with a Drexel win, the Dragons will need help in order to secure their fourth straight Colonial Athletic Association Championship appearance. If Hofstra loses to Fairfield on Friday, then Drexel will clinch a spot. If UMass loses to Delaware on Friday night, Drexel would still have to win to get in. If there is a five-way tie for first place, the tiebreaker policies will come into effect, and goal differential in league games could come into play.
Drexel's senior class has been part of 38 wins and played on the school's only lacrosse team to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Clark has been a regular as a defensive middie for the least two season. Foley is a member of the man-up unit, while Harrison is a contributor on the man-down unit. De Snoo has 16 career goals, including seven this year. Saputo and Belka were both All-Americans a year ago and have a good shot to get those accolades again this year. Belka is 10th in career goals (95), assists (64) and points (159) at Drexel, while Saputo has won 635 faceoffs and has scooped up more than 400 ground balls.
Towson comes into the game comfortably in the CAA Tournament. However, with a win, the Tigers wrap up the top seed and will host the tournament which begins next Thursday. Towson is 3-1 in CAA play and is ranked 17th in this week's USILA Poll. The Tigers' defense has been outstanding all year, giving up less than seven goals a game. They have allowed more than nine goals just once this season, and that came back in February. The Tigers were surprised by Hofstra last weekend, 9-2. It snapped a four-game winning streak. Joe Seider leads the offense with 26 goals and 31 points. Spencer Parks (28) and Ryan Drenner (26) are right behind him. Tyler White leads the CAA in both goals against average and save percentage.
