Women's Lacrosse Can't Keep Up with No. 9 Princeton, 16-9
2/24/2016 6:37:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA – Lauren Gerrie put together her first hat trick as a Dragon, but it was not enough as the Drexel women's lacrosse team was handled by No. 9 Princeton on Wednesday, 16-9. The Dragons never led in the game, but did put together a solid offensive performance against the highly-ranked Tigers.
Gerrie, who netted the game-winner in overtime against Columbia over the weekend, scored Drexel's first goal of the afternoon, then helped keep the offense churning late as the Dragons prevented Princeton from pulling away entirely. Nadia Pelham-Lacey and Emily Duffey each scored a pair of goals as well, with Pelham-Lacey's pair extending her streak of games with multiple points to eight. Caroline Thiele netted her first goal of the season, adding an assist on Gerrie's first goal.
Princeton wasted little time getting its offense in gear. The Tigers' Olivia Hompe scored just over a minute into the game, the first of six goals she would score on the afternoon. It was only 63 seconds later when Anya Gersoff scored to make it a 2-0 game.
Drexel had a response, however. Gerrie worked inside, then took a feed from Thiele and powered it home to put the Dragons on the board at the 26:39 mark of the first half. Pelham-Lacey's first goal, an unassisted goal, was just 35 seconds later to even the score.
Though the response from the Dragons was impressive, they could not win the ensuing faceoff, and Princeton began a 4-0 run over the next four minutes, holding Drexel off the scoreboard for nearly eight minutes as the Tigers built a 6-2 lead. Pelham-Lacey ended the drought with 18:13 still remaining in a high-scoring first half on a free position shot. Princeton would score five of the next seven, with a pair from Duffey breaking up the Tigers' run as Princeton went into the half ahead 11-5.
Devin Nihill got the scoring underway in a subdued second half, her fifth goal of the season and an unassisted goal with 3:53 off the clock after halftime. Any thoughts of a Drexel comeback were done in, however, when Princeton scored the next four and held the Dragons scoreless for nearly 17 minutes before Thiele made her free position attempt count with 9:22 left on the clock.
Though Gerrie would chip in two more goals before things were wrapped up, the Dragons had dug themselves too large a hole against the No. 9 Tigers and fell, 16-9.
Despite the score, there were positives for the Dragons. Drexel outshot the Tigers 28-26 and nearly matched Princeton in draw controls with 13 against the Tigers' 14. However, the Dragons converted just three of 11 free position opportunities while Princeton was 6-for-10. The Tigers' goalie combination of Ellie DeGarmo and Mary Kate McDonough came up with 13 saves, while Drexel's Carlee Ries and Sigourney Heerink managed five.
Drexel will look to rebound from its first loss of the season when it returns to action on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons will host Colgate at noon at Vidas Field.
