HAMPTON, Va. – The Drexel softball team defeated Hampton, 10-5 to go undefeated at the Lady Pirate Classic on Sunday afternoon. Ellen Scott went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Gabriela Kuroda added four RBI and one run scored while going 2-for-4 from the plate.
Scott got the Dragons on the board in the top of the first as she doubled to left field and brought Savanna Johnson around to score. Then with one out and runners on second and third, Kuroda reached on a fielding error that allowed Baeley Reed to cross the plate. A two-out double from Kimberly Chan brought two more runs home and gave the Dragons a 4-0 lead after just one half inning.
The Pirates got three runs back in the bottom of the second, but Drexel would extend its lead to 5-3 in the top of third as Kuroda doubled to center field to bring Scott across the plate from second.
In the bottom of the third, Hampton threatened to score again with the bases loaded and two outs, but pitcher Tara Konopka was able to get the Pirates' Kial Watts to strike out swinging to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth, the Dragons added another two runs as Kuroda singled to left center with the bases loaded. Drexel had a chance to do more damage as they left three on base, but still ended the inning with a 7-3 advantage.
The Pirates cut the Dragons' lead to 7-5 with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth, but it wouldn't be enough to stop the Dragons as they added to their lead in the top of the seventh. Johnson got one back for Drexel as she knocked in Laura Horwitz with a single through the right side and then Scott followed with a double to center field that brought in the final two runs that would put Drexel ahead, 10-5.
Katie Haley, who relieved Konopka with two outs in the sixth inning, was able to force three outs in four batters in the bottom of the seventh to allow the Dragons to walk away with their second victory of the weekend.
Konopka was awarded the win, her first of the season, as the Dragons improved to 5-3 overall.
The Dragons return to action starting on Wednesday, March 9 when they will begin competition at the Rebel Games which will take place in Orlando, Fla. Drexel will play 10 games over the five day span and will take on Holy Cross, Florida A&M, and Hampton twice each during the tournament, while also playing single games against Sacred Heart, Creighton, Rider, and Bucknell.
