PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's lacrosse team returned home for the first time in over a month on Sunday afternoon as the Dragons hosted No. 18 Towson at Vidas Field, but it was not a happy homecoming as Towson held the Dragons off, 13-6.
Devin Nihill had two goals to lead the Dragons. Lacey Aghazarian, Nadia Pelham-Lacey, Grace Osterdale and Maggie Stetson also scored as Drexel fell to 2-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Nihill became the first Dragon since Alyse Maiden in 2013 to score 30 goals in a season with her second of the game.
The Dragons did take an early 1-0 lead when Lacey Aghazarian netted her 18th of the season just over six minutes into the game. Drexel had won the opening draw and forced a Towson turnover after the Tigers gained possession. Aghazarian drove in off the Towson turnover and scored a quick goal to put the Dragons on top.
That would prove to be the final lead of the afternoon for the Dragons as Towson scored the game's next four goals. With 5:09 to play in the first half, Devin Nihill ended an 18-minute Drexel scoring drought with her 29th of the season. Towson would get two more in the final minutes of the first half, though, sending the game into intermission with the Tigers holding a 6-2 lead.
Drexel appeared to get some momentum after halftime when Nihill scored again, but the goal was waved off on a dangerous shot call, and the Tigers took advantage of the ensuing yellow card to make it a 7-2 game.
The Dragons would fight back, however. Drexel scored three of the game's next four goals, including goals from Nadia Pelham-Lacey, Nihill, and Maggie Stetson to leave them within three at 8-5 with 19:07 to play.
Though the Dragons had opportunities to get closer, Towson's defense held strong. The Tigers were finally able to get the ball in their offensive end and score with 10:27 to play, making it a four-goal game and starting another 4-0 Tigers run that broke the Dragons' backs. Osterdale's late goal off a feed from Emily Duffey was not enough to mount a last-minute comeback as the Dragons saw their brief two-game winning streak snapped.
Drexel will return home next Friday when the Dragons host Elon at Vidas Field. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
