PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's lacrosse team were dealt a 16-11 loss against the Penn Quakers on Tuesday afternoon at Vidas Field.
Maggie Stetson led the Dragons with three goals and five draw controls while Colleen Grady, Karson Harris and Caroline Cummings added two goals apiece. Zoe Bennett turned away nine saves.
The first half belonged to the Dragons as they outscored the Quakers 5-3 and held a slight 5-4 advantage on draw controls. Drexel got on the board first with an unassisted goal less than three minutes into the first half. The goal was credited to Stetson after Harris capitalized off a Penn turnover by scooping up a ground ball and moving the play up the field. Following another Penn turnover, Lucy Schneiderith and Grady scored unassisted goals less than one minute apart to give the Dragons a 3-0 advantage with 19:04 on the clock. Penn managed to get two past Drexel goalkeeper, Bennett, however, the Dragons matched each goal with one of its own to close out the half with the lead.
Penn came out of halftime looking for revenge and cut the deficit down to one on three different occasions within ten minutes after the first whistle. Stetson scored her third goal of the day for a hat trick with 23:15 remaining to maintain a one point lead but Penn responded with three unanswered to take the lead for the remainder of the game.
Drexel caught a second wind in the final minutes of play scoring four goals from four different players to close the gap down to five but the comeback effort was not enough to overcome Penn's 10-0 run.
The Dragons will regroup and return to action on Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Villanova.
