Men's Soccer Dropped at UNCW, 3-1
10/26/2019 9:10:00 PM | Men's Soccer
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Drexel men's soccer team will see its chances for a postseason berth come down to its final regular season game after the Dragons fell at UNCW on Saturday, 3-1. Drexel, which had a chance to clinch its first CAA Tournament berth since 2013 with a win, will instead have to earn at least one point in next Sunday's rivalry game at Delaware in order to secure that spot.
Joey Martini had a game-tying goal for the Dragons early in the second half after UNCW had taken a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of the game, but the Seahawks, who lead the Colonial Athletic Association and have yet to lose a conference game, responded less than five minutes later and added an insurance goal midway through the half to cap the victory.
Martini's goal, which came late in the 55th minute, was his second of the season and snapped a scoreless drought of more than 250 minutes for Drexel, which had not scored since a 3-0 win at Saint Joseph's on Oct. 15 after netting at least one goal in each of the season's first 12 contests. It also erased a 1-0 deficit that the Dragons had faced since Phillip Goodrum scored just 6:45 into the action.
The deadlock did not last long. UNCW once again turned to Goodrum, who netted his second of the night and team-leading seventh of the season to make it a 2-1 game in the 60th minute. Wilhelm Nillson added another in the 73rd minute to provide the final 3-1 margin.
While the Dragons were falling to UNCW, Delaware, which sits two points behind the sixth-place Dragons, took a 5-0 loss at Hofstra. Had Drexel won and moved five points up on the Blue Hens, the Dragons would have clinched at least the sixth seed.
As it is, that celebration has been put on hold as Drexel will need at least a point next Sunday in Newark to secure the bid. The Dragons could finish as high as fifth with a win and a William & Mary loss at James Madison next Saturday. Both teams would then have 10 points, but Drexel would hold the tiebreaker over William & Mary thanks to its 2-1 win over the Tribe on Sept. 21.
Sunday's game at Delaware kicks off at 7 p.m. It was originally scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m., but had to be moved back due to field availability.
