TOWSON, Md. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team hung tough on the road with one of the top teams in the Colonial Athletic Association on Sunday afternoon, but ultimately came up short in a critical game at Towson, falling 12-10.
Drexel never led in the game, but also never faced more than a three-goal deficit. The Dragons had the Tigers' lead down to one with 16:17 to play and still trailed by just two with 10:08 to play, but Towson scored next and the Dragons could not get back on the board until just 1:58 remained in the game.
Karson Harris once again led the way for Drexel offensively, scoring four times with an assist. She added seven draw controls, leaving her with 133 in her two-year collegiate career. That already has her sitting in second place on the Dragons' all-time list, having passed Amanda Norcini (132 from 2011-14) during the game. Harris now has 87 draws with a game still to go in this regular season, already the program's all-time single-season leader.
Colleen Grady also had a five-point afternoon, scoring three times with two assists. Claire Jarema, Grace Osterdale and Jamie Schneidereith added goals. Lindsay Shettle had two of the Dragons' nine caused turnovers. Harris had four ground balls with Jarema adding three. Zoe Bennett stopped 12 shots in goal for the Dragons.
Towson struck first, but Harris had an answer with her first goal of the afternoon to make it a 1-1 game 8:10 into the action. That would prove to be the final time the Dragons were even, but they stayed close throughout the afternoon. Towson could not string together more than two straight goals in the game, but held a 6-3 lead at the break.
The Dragons gradually chipped away in the second half until a Harris goal with 16:17 to go made it a 9-8 game. Towson responded with a pair of scores, though, before Drexel made it 11-9 with 10:08 still to go. Again, the Tigers held Drexel at arms' length, responding quickly with a goal to rebuild the three-goal lead and keeping the Dragons off the scoreboard for nearly nine minutes.
Drexel will wrap up its regular season on Saturday when the Dragons host Hofstra. That game is set to get underway at 3 p.m., with the annual Senior Day ceremony to precede the game. The Dragons enter the week with slim postseason hopes still alive, as the Dragons need Elon to lose at William & Mary on Friday night, followed by a Drexel victory on Saturday.
