Drexel Rolls Past Delaware in the CAA Opener, 13-5

PHILADELPHIA – Corinne Bednarik and Molly Weygand earned hat tricks as Drexel rolled past Delaware, 15-3 on Saturday afternoon. DU open CAA play with a dominate victory, with seven different Dragons adding goals. Drexel improves to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Delaware falls to 6-2 and 0-1 in conference action.
BY THE NUMBERS
Drexel kept the Blue Hens scoreless until the 6:17 mark in the second quarter.
The Dragons continued their success in the midfield going 20-22 on clears.
Jenika Cuocco stopped 13 shots to end the day with a .722 save percentage.
Alex Wall and Alli VanSlyke picked up four ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Weygand opened the scoring at the 11:40 mark with her fourth goal of the year. She then followed up with her fifth tally eight minutes later. Bednarik fired two shots past the UD keeper to give the Dragons a 4-0 lead with 17 seconds left in the opening quarter. With seven seconds to go in the first following a green card from Delaware, Allison Drake snuck a shot past the Blue Hens to extend the Dragons lead to 5-0.
In the second frame, Bednarik completed her sixth hat trick of the season and Lizzie Yurchak fired back to give Delaware its first score of the game. Maddie Fowler recorded her fourth tally of the season and Jaclyn Marszal answered for UD as Drexel went into the half with a 7-2 advantage.
Drexel continued its offensive success to open up the second half with an unassisted goal by Kate Marano. Marano followed up her goal with an assist from behind the cage to Ellie Wall who sprinted from the top of the eight for her first tally of the day.
At the start of the final frame, UD answered back on a goal from Keira Grant to cut the Dragons lead to 9-4. Alex Wall caused a turnover on the defensive end and ran the ball down the field. Bea Buckley then found the fifth-year senior in front of the cage for her ninth score of the year. The Dragons added three more scores from Marano, Weygand, and Drake.

Drexel continues its homestand on Friday, March 22nd in its inaugural matchup against new CAA foe, Campbell. Action from Vidas Field is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
