STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The No. 2 seed Drexel women's lacrosse team took down No. 3 seed Delaware, 20-11, to advance to their second straight CAA Championship game. The Dragons matched the most goals scored in a single CAA postseason contest, tying the 20 scored by Loyola against American on April 16, 1993. The 20 tallies are also the most scored in a CAA semifinal game.
Four Dragons recorded hat tricks, with Allison Drake and Bridget Finley leading the way with four goals. Bea Buckley collected six points with four assists, as she is two shy of the single-season program assists record.
Delaware struck in the first minute of the game. Riley Sturtevant scored a goal to give the Blue Hens the early advantage. The Dragons responded fast, as Bridget Finley tallied just 30 seconds later. Delaware came right back with one of their own—Jaclyn Marszal found the back of the net to retake the lead, 2-1.
Allison Drake made her presence felt at the 8:31 mark. The Easton, Pa. product was fouled on her attempt to get through the alley. She later scored on the free-position opportunity to tie things up at two apiece. Bea Buckley snuck behind the back of the net as she looked to find an open Dragon teammate. The sophomore decided to take it herself and fired just in front of the cage for her first of the day as Drexel took their first lead of the game.
Buckley was then able to find Drake, who spun around the defender and got it past the goalkeeper for the goal. The Philadelphia native added another to cap off a 4-0 run. Delaware then scored on a free-position shot. DU collected three more goals to close the quarter, with Finley, Drake, and Kate Marano each scoring.
The Dragons got on the board again to begin the second. Ellie Wall finished the eight-meter for her first goal of the day. Delaware finally broke the scoring streak, as Lulu Rishko dove down the middle for the goal. Both teams traded scores before Anna Maria Gragnani and Wall added two more goals to finish the half with a 12-5 advantage.
Kate Quinn scored back-to-back goals to open the second half. The junior midfielder recorded both goals in the first 1:30 of play. Finley joined the party to finish a five-goal streak—their third rally of four or more goals on the day. The Blue Hens put together a pair of goals, with Kennedy Radziul and Halen Saroney each hitting the back of the net to stop the drought. Mary Claire Heubeck scored her first career postseason goal to get the Dragons back on track. She finished the game with 13 draw controls, two shy of a program record. The Dragons dominated the center circle, besting the Blue Hens 22-13.
Morgan Gore scored a pair for Delaware in under a minute to bring the Blue Hens back to within seven. Each team ended the quarter with a score, as Wall scored on an underhand bounce shot for the tally.
The Dragons scored three more goals, as Delaware added one, and Drexel closed things out, 20-11. This is the second-highest total the Dragons have earned this season. Jenika Cuocco had 11 saves in front of the cage with two ground balls.
Drexel will now face No. 1 seed Stony Brook in the CAA Championship game on Saturday. This is the Dragons' fourth CAA title game in five seasons, as Drexel looks to take home their second CAA title in program history.
